It will depend entirely on the geology of the region. If you are fortunate enough to live in an Artesian Basin getting to water is not a problem, although polution is more likely the closer you are to the surface. Just sticking a pick into the ground can, in some places, give you a spring.

If, however, you do not live on top of such a resource, you have to drill deep to get it. A friend of mine was quoted £6000 for a well east of Fethiye two months ago.
