Smile Porcupines in Akbuk!

I can never resist the mountain road from Bodrum airport even after our plane was delayed 2 hours and it meant trekking across in the early hours in our tinny hire car! In the past we have been held up by a family of wild boar, seen a plague of frogs as well as the usual wildlife, but this time was special with no fewer than 5 foxes spotted and then after coming through Kazikli spotting this large badger size creature - caught in the headlights it raised its quills and zig zagged down the road in all it's splendour for severally minutes before finally darting in to the shrubbery. It was surely a porcupine, yet a quick look on Wikipedia - therefore it must be true! - suggests they are indigenous to the Americas, southern Asia, and Africa, but no mention of Asia Minor!
So has anybody else spotted one of these or had the long day travelling addled our brains?!

Prickles

They're apparently the same species as the Indian porcupine. They must have walked here from Mumbai.

Indian crested porcupine - Hystrix indica : WAZA : World Association of Zoos and Aquariums

They must be better off here than Mumbai, I have seen two on they way to Bodrum, the quills are good for fishing floats (so I have been told)

Re: Porcupines in Akbuk!

Ian picked up several 12" quills when walking the dogs, so we have them too! Never actually seen a porcupine wandering about though.
