Izmir to Akbuk

We shall be coming out to Akbuk in Feb, flying into Izmir Adnan Menderes airport. Picking up a hire car (already booked) and travelling down to Akbuk. Never having driven this route before, a) what are the roads like, b) are they sign posted well, c) are there any tolls to be paid, d) how long does it take (husband not a particularly slow driver but safe). Flight arrives about 4pm so not sure how dark/light it will be. Cannot find any useful road maps (not that I'm any good at navigating - husband usually has to use his iphone sat nav!). Normally we fly into Bodum and have mastered the mountain route but Izmir is a new one to us. Any advice would be appreciated

Anna

there are 2 or 3 tolls--most of the roads are swift and menderes is on the way to akbuk so you dont have to go near the city.--its 'just' light now at 5,45pm in izmir so judge the light conditions at getting 3 minutes lighter per day from now on-

Thumbs up Re: Izmir to Akbuk

Hi Anna, when you come out of the airport you will come to the D550, you need to be going left/east towards Kisik and Yesilkoy, there may be a sign for Aydin. This road brings you to the E87, follow signs for Aydin and proceed down this road. About 10 miles after the Selcuk/Kusadasi turn off is the D525 which I believe is signed for Bodrum, this road takes you to Soke. At the roundabout at Soke, turn left and go down the by pass. After clearing Soke, passing retail parks on your right, carry on down this road, through the traffic lights, up the hill and turn right for Akbuk/Altinkum. You should be on familiar road now. Have a look at Google satellite map for Izmir and this will show the route i've described, the airport is south of Izmir itself.

Anna, coming out of the Airport you turn left taking the sign for Ephesus...don't go straight on our you'll end up in the rush hour traffic in Izmir.
After driving for 10 minutes you'll see the turn off for the motorway; head for Aydin. You will however need to stop and buy a KGS card from either the building on the left at the entrance to the motorway as you can't pay cash at the booths anymore .... or buy one at the building on the right at the toll gates when exiting at Soke.

There is a straightforward scenic route that doesn't bring you on to any motorway, bringing you through Kusadasi and Soke, but as it will be getting dark you're better on the motorway.

On leaving the airport turn left after the petrol station and follow the road to the right which will take you onto the carriage which takes you to the motorway.

Re: Izmir to Akbuk

Hi, i just wondered who you have booked your car hire through, if you had any recomendations. We plan to hire a car at Izmir airport this year as we have had negative experiences the last 2 years in Altinkum. Many thanks.

Re: Izmir to Akbuk

Hi Belisa,
We are using Budget Rent a Car again. Back in September 2011, we flew to Bodrum and picked up our car ( a Ford Focus Station Wagon) at 645 tl for 7 days hire. No problems in picking up or dropping off at the airport. This time we are still using Budget from Izmir airport at 602 tl for 8 days hire, also a Ford Focus. (I booked this back in Nov 11, I think the prices may have gone up a bit now). I actually rang the Uk Budget website as I wanted immediate confirmation of the type of car. I can report back in February as to the Izmir experience just in case it's different from the Bodrum one.
