Scooter

What are the rules and cost for owning a scooter in Turkey? Am I even allowed to as a foreigner? Could someone please clarify?

Hi.
Yes a non Turk is allowed to buy a vehicle here, but you will need a residents visa in order to do so. To make the purchased will involve a visit to the notary, and a cost to the buyer of around 150 lira, and the translation fee.
You will also have a period of 30 days after purchase, to register the vehicle in your name and get a new number plate, with an 'M' letter, denoting you are a foreigner. This is a cost of around 200/250 lira. Failure to do this within 30 days will incur a penalty.
If caught driving and not done this, the vehicle is likely to be confiscated.
Only your family members are allowed to drive this.
Insurance is cheap, as is the annual taxation.

Hope this helps.

Re: Scooter

Also remember vehicles here have to be taxed and insured even when not on the road.
Also you can only drive for six months on your UK licence.

Re: Scooter

You also need a motorbike license, even for electric scooters.

Re: Scooter

Thank you all. Seems to be a lot of trouble doing this. We are not residents so I guess that makes it even harder. Are the rules different for different nationalities? We are not brittish but swedish.

Re: Scooter

To purchase a scooter you must have a Residency Permit, then you buy the scooter,if it's new the selling agent should do everything for you.The cost is around 550tl to put it on the road.If you buy 2nd hand you will go to a Noter with the seller & have the bike signed over to you, around 145tl for noter+ 60tl[ish] for official translator.Again if 2nd hand, the Noter will give you a paper which allows you to ride the bike for a max.of 30 days before having to register the bike into your name[and maybe new no.plates].In the Bodrum area this is done at the Mugla Police Building.
The road tax for a scooter of 100cc up to 250cc is 92tl a year & Turkish manatory 3rd party insurance is around 45tl.Fully comprehensive cover is not offered for scooters, due to their low value.
