I think it shows that this government are trying to put things right that have beed abused for many years. And of course expats should get health care, but only as they say if you have paid in for 10 years or more.

Re: YAY free healthcare in UK for ex pats

Sorry but this is NOT new! It's always been the case for people claiming State pension with previous contributions of 10 years, this is just a welcome extension of the existing rules.

Re: YAY free healthcare in UK for ex pats

As one of the conditions of acceptability onto SGK is that you no longer have access to your own states healthcare system, does this now rule Brits with more than 10 years Nat Ins contributions out of the SGK system?

Re: YAY free healthcare in UK for ex pats

No. You are only allowed access to UK health care for health issues arising whilst you are visiting the UK and not for any pre-planned operations/treatments etc. In other words you cannot decide you want to go back for a specific operation or treatment and pre-book it.

Re: YAY free healthcare in UK for ex pats

I'm not sure that it does. As Yildiz said English OAP's expats are allowed free treatment in hospitals in the UK if they had paid 10 years contribution. But it was only if a situation arose during their visit that they needed immediate emergency medical attention. It has never been the case that English expat OAP's were allowed to have free elective surgery for non emergency care unless they were pretending they were still living in the UK. I haven't read the small print about the new law but would think that the same rules would apply for all ex pats.

So, If we can only get emergency treatment and not full access to the NHS I can't see how we can be denied entry to the SGK system. Still having said that this is Turkey and anything is possible.

Re: YAY free healthcare in UK for ex pats

As I've always understood it (from the NHS rule book) eligible ex-pat pensioners were always entitled to free healthcare on visits to the UK, and IMMEDIATE access to full NHS entitlement as soon as they moved back permanently. For other ex-pat returners a qualifying period was necessary, 6 months residence I think. So, for example, the diagnosis of a serious illness in Turkey followed by a rapid, permanent return, would give full access to all NHS services instantly.

The issue of SGK is completely separate, and not dependant on showing that there is no health entitlement in the native country. The requirement is a residence permit - you can join after 1 year, and if the permit expires so does your health cover.

Re: YAY free healthcare in UK for ex pats

Hopefully then it means that but not pre-planned treatment or treatment that can await their return home. will not apply anymore and that if we want to pre-plan treatment in the future we will be able to

It certainly is news, it has never been the case where any expat of any age can return and have free NHS treatment without a 6 month qualifying period. This 10 year contribution news is totally new and very good news for expats of all ages who will now have full access to NHS treatment, and can return from their chosen country as and when they require to receive it providing they have contributed a minimum of 10 years NI payments.
