Foreigners Committee

İ have just found out about the above. İt seems to meet often but doesn't seem to publish the dates nor does it seem to deal or report back on issues of concern to foreigners. Can anyone throw light on this committee.

Re: Foreigners Committee

Is this part of the Turkish government or a voluntary group? Where did you hear about it?

Re: Foreigners Committee

it been going for years Aine they used to meet once a month in the town hall i dont know what if any different arrangements will be made with the new organisation
theyre very mixed group mostly Germans Danes and Russians .. they are very active in cultural events and charity work as well as schools as many members have children going to school here you have to have been living İn Alanya at least three years before you become eligible to join the committee ..i hear the Russians are very active these days
they have a facebook page...

as they say....
10 years ago the population of foreigners in Alanya was 5500 today its almost 40 thousand of these 25000 live year round. There is no difference between a European city. "New Alanyans "feel themselves lıke being at home

Re: Foreigners Committee

I met some Turkish people who I think worked in a department of the Belediye at an ex pat event at the Grand Okan last year. They told me and my friend that they need more new members for the Foreigners committee and almost fell off their chairs with excitement when they discovered my friend is American and were almost begging her to become a member. She hadnt lived in Turkey long but no mention of that was made. They asked if I was also American and instantly dismissed me to the point of being rude when I told them i'm English. There were lots of British people there who would probably love to be on the committee and we did point that out to them but they were completely disinterested.

Re: Foreigners Committee

i can share that experience Alison as a friend of mine who opened a business in Alanya was keen to know more and to get involved in the running of the town..so i took her along to the monthly meeting and introduced her..she was told she hadnt lived long enough in Alanya and the atmosphere was chilly ..
groups like this are not my cup of tea but to those who wish to be involved the only group for uk people is the current active womens group..

you may remember two years ago when a big fuss was made by the Emniyet who wanted to assure foreigners in Alanya they were not yabancılar but yeni Alanyaylılar ..so there shouldnt be this feeling of competition between the different nationalities but there is definitely with this committee a reluctance to share with certain foreigners

there are people of 72 different nationalities living in Alanya

Question Re: Foreigners Committee

Hi Shirley
Are you able to give a bit more info on the current women's group, where it is, what they do, how often do they meet etc. Would they accept a temporary visit. Maybe a contact number. Although I currently don't live over in Alanya I'd really like to discover these things and maybe have a little try out when I am there for 6 weeks at a time. At home here in London for several years I held a craft night in my house, making cards, decoupage, sewn cards and all sorts of things, we also used to have a quiz night and once a month 'be ladies wot do lunch'. It was always such a laugh. When I'm over in Alanya with my friend myself and some Turkish friends make knitted scarves and bed covers. I use the scarves but not the bed covers, I leave that for my Turkish friends family as they really like these things. Its actually very therapeutic doing these things outside in the shade with a cup or two of cay plus having to practise Turkish as they don't speak English. Its always good having get togethers where ever we are so any info would be valuable.
