Re: Turkish George

Ah ! so St georges day is a religious celebration or feast day, he being venerated by many countries, not necessarily an english thing.
The Cross of St George is, it seems, a Genoese pennant. odd that our Uber nationalists attach such veneration to it.

His memorial, Saint George's Day, is traditionally celebrated on 23 April. (See under "Feast days" below for the use of the Julian calendar by the Eastern Orthodox Church).

The widespread attribution to Saint George of the red cross on a white field in western art - "Saint George's Cross" probably first arose in Genoa, which had adopted this image for their flag and George as their patron saint in the 12th century. A vexillum beati Georgii is mentioned in the Genovese annals for the year 1198, referring to a red flag with a depiction of Saint George and the dragon.

Re: Turkish George

Yes I've seen that and other effigies in several places in the Sinai years ago. I was then fascinated as to why they were showing him off.
