Re: Wanted: Good news

A number of orphaned British children caught up in the war in Syria are to be brought home to the UK, the foreign secretary has said.

They will be the first UK citizens to be repatriated from the area of north-eastern Syria formerly controlled by the Islamic State (IS) group.

The "innocent" children should "never have been subjected to the horrors of war", Dominic Raab said.

Charities have urged the government to bring every British child back home.

Those who are returning are expected to arrive in the UK in the coming days.

For security reasons, further details of their repatriation cannot be given.

In a statement, Mr Raab said: "We have facilitated their return home, because it was the right thing to do.

"Now they must be allowed the privacy and given the support to return to a normal life."

BBC Middle East Correspondent Quentin Sommerville said the orphaned children were handed over to a delegation from the Foreign Office and had left Syria, with diplomats saying they were doing "very well".

$1,000,000 raised for koalas injured in Australian bushfires
An online fundraiser for koalas injured in Australian bushfires has received more donations than any other campaign on the country’s GoFundMe platform this year.

Hundreds of koalas are estimated to have died in blazes that have ravaged parts of eastern Australia for weeks. Fire crews have been trying to rescue injured wildlife from the wreckage, with devastating pictures showing burnt and bloodied koalas in desperate need of water.

A crowdfunding page set up by Port Macquarie Koala Hospital to provide automatic water drinking stations for the bears asked for $25,000 (£13,000). But within weeks donations soared past $1m (£520,000), making it the country’s second largest fundraising campaign since GoFundme was launched there in 2016.

Re: Wanted: Good news

We were walking through the market this morning and I was about to pay for a kilo of prime beef steak (nearly £4 – what a rip off 😊 ) but when I reached for my wallet it wasn’t there! I thought I must have left it at home but fortunately my wife had some cash.

We walked back to the car and a young girl dashed out of a shop asking if that was my yellow Honda. I replied “да” and she said you must have dropped this (my wallet) when you got out!

Smiles all round and we went off to lunch together.

This is supposed to be a corrupt country but in 6 years here I’ve never seen any.

Re: Wanted: Good news

Similar experience Jacey, last week after shopping in Aldi realized when I got back to my car, I had dropped my handbag. Rushed back to the store and relieved to find that an honest person had handed it in, especially as I had been to the cash point and had drawn out £200! Store manager had acted quickly, by using my phone and telephoning my Brother (who is I.C.E. under contacts).

Re: Wanted: Good news

A few years ago I left my purse in the trolley in Aldi when I took it back after loading my car. I didnt realise until I got home and called them in a panic. They asked me to describe it and said yes, someone saw it in the trolley as they were about to use it and immediately told staff.

Re: Wanted: Good news

We have just had lunch in town. On the way home we stopped to buy bread from a very small kiosk. The sign on the door (translated into English) reads ' Those who are in need of bread can just take it from the shelves and leave without the need to explain anything' Fantastic gesture. It is not a gimmick, the sign has been there for over a year.

Re: Wanted: Good news

We once left a wallet on a market stall in Datca, and didn't realise for some time. We had a phone call from a neighbour to tell us he had the wallet, and it turned out that the stallholder had found the wallet, found our neighbour's card inside, and called him. Our neighbour had gone into town and collected it for us, all the liras and cards safe inside.
