Red face Smoking Ban

I read that come April there will be a smoking ban in all public place's and that bars restaurants and tea rooms have 18 month's to comply, does that mean that when we visit this August you wont be able to smoke in the Hotel, the shopping centre, while speaking to friends in the shop's, I dont smoke but my parents do and cant believe that Turkey will enforce something like this, any info would be great, thanks.

Re: Smoking Ban

Forgive me if you're all fed up with this subject - just wanted to post this related article from the Bodrum Observer ;

Law on Smoking Bans to go in action 19 May

"The law extending smoking ban to all bars, restaurants and coffeehouses was published in the Official Gazette on Saturday 19 January. The Turkish parliament passed a bill banning smoking in all bars, restaurants and coffeehouses on 3 January, and President Abdullah Gül ratified it on Friday 18 January.

The law will take effect four months after it is approved by the president. But the ban in restaurants, coffeehouses and cafeterias will be take effect within 18 months to July 2009 to allow businesses to make necessary preparations. According to the law, smoking will be banned in buses, airplanes, large offices to all enclosed public areas, open air locations such as stadiums, sports facilities and playgrounds as well as taxis, ferries and trains. Smoking will be banned in state institutions, workplaces and ship decks as of May 19. Also, it will be banned in gardens of workplaces. A 50 YTL fine will be imposed on offenders. Owners of cafes, restaurants and bars could be fined up to 5,000 YTL if they allow customers to light up.Those who throw cigarette butts to streets will be fined to 20 new Turkish liras (YTL).

According to the independent national newspaper Vatan, the new law is stricter than in many western countries. Tobacco products will not be sold to people below 18 and those who are below 18 will not be employed in tobacco product enterprises and its marketing. Television stations would also be barred from airing shows in which people can be seen smoking."

Re: Smoking Ban

I simply can't imagine any 'working class' Turk taking a smoking ban seriously..
