Lawyers fight back
Posted on Saturday, November 01 @ 1435 CDT by editor

TWO major players in the Karma Legal affair – which has left many Didim and Bodrum property investors concerned – have denied “they are running away with people’s money” and pledged to help them get their title deeds.

After the collapse of Parador Properties, many of its former clients, were left anxious when they began to receive emails from Karma Legal, the legal consultants tasked with completing their legal paperwork towards property ownership, that it was closing its Bodrum and Didim offices.

Voices Newspaper tracked down both Ruhiser Akın, the Board Chair of Karma Legal, and one of its contracted lawyers - and who has the power of attorney for most of the customers - Deniz Gökkılıç – and asked the legal standing of the customers.

What has emerged is that Karma has handed over its Didim-based customer files to former Karma employee – but now independent solicitor – Ms Hilal Aygen, while Mr Gökkılıç is still pursuing the legal process on behalf of about 600 clients.

However, both Karma and Mr Gökkılıç have told Voices that clients can, if they wish, appoint new lawyers for completion of the process and to switch the power of attorney, or continue through Ms Aygen.

Whatever the choice, it will almost certainly mean more money being spent by the clients to appoint Ms Aygen, as an independent lawyer, or any other lawyer, to complete the process.

The prospect of more money being spent has aggrieved many former Karma Legal customers.

Ruhiser Akın, the Board Chair of Istanbul-based Karma Legal, told Voices Newspaper said:

“Let me first make this clear: Karma Legal is not closed. Only the Didim branch is closed.

“Even before Parador Properties stopped its activities, Karma Legal continued running.

Wıthout gettıng any new clıents for more than 18 months, it faced fınancıal dıffıcultıes and was forced to make the unfortunate decision to close the Didim and Bodrum offices.”

“However, not to victimize our customers, we have handed all the files over to lawyer Hilal Aygen.

“We will not hold on to anybody’s title deed; our customers can apply to Hilal Aygen to complete their title deeds procedures. People may choose to work with another lawyer.

“We have provided our customers with consulting even in matters which were not in the contract; we solved their problems without a fee. We gave the full service for the fee paid to us.

“Some of our customers have not got their title deeds yet. This is not because of us; it is because of the contractors they bought off from. Some contractors did not fulfil their responsibilities so that the title deeds could be transferred.”

Ruhiser Akın added: “Would it be better if we took our customers’ files to İstanbul with us? We left the files with a lawyer in Didim so that no one is harmed.”

Akın defended that they had fully served in return of the fee paid by the customers for legal consulting.

Mr Gökkılıç said that he came to Didim on a regular basis and that no one should be aggrieved. He said: “We have so far given about 300 title deeds. We still have about 600 title deeds transfers to do. Nobody should be worried.

“We are not running away and we will continue to help people get their title deeds. I, and in conjunction with Hilal Aygen, will serve them to the very end.”

Ms Aygen, who was handed the files of the Karma Legal customers, said that she was now operating as an indepent solicitor and any fees charged were her own solicitor’s fee.
