Jewellers - Gold Prices

Hi there, just thought i would ask for some advice. I use Sinbad's opposite Carrefour supermarket to clean my jewellery so I went to them as a favour for my friend.

My best friend lives in Spain and is getting married in a few months. She said gold is very expensive in Spain at the moment and she ended up buying her wedding rings in England as they were almost half the price to her.

Knowing that Turkey is well known for their jewellers and in particular, gold she asked would I find out the price for a curb chain with a gold cross. It is to be a wedding present for her soon to be husband.

Now I know the price of gold is very high at the moment and I told her to expect so but I was a little shocked to say the least. Anyone who could advise on this I would be greatful:

27.75g Curb chain £860
18.89g Curb chain £585
15.80g Curb Chain (this would be pushing it as it looks suitable for a lady) £490

2.23g Plain gold cross £88

All of the above in 14ct Yellow Gold.

I haven't told her the prices yet as I'm hoping you can tell me if you think this is right or if not where else I can go that's open?

Re: Jewellers - Gold Prices

according to currency converter XE.com: XAU to GBP rate: 1.00 XAU = 749.287 GBP the price for an ounce of gold at the moment is 750 pounds so given that the heaviest you have quoted is just over an ounce and to allow for manufacture, etc it seems about right, maybe a little overpriced but not too much, any chance of haggling it down if you are armed with the gold prices??

Am now fed up we sold a load of gold a while ago and got nothing like this price D'oh.........oh the benefit of hindsight eh??

Re: Jewellers - Gold Prices

It is necessary to haggle quite hard, gold is expensive now but acceptable deals are there to be had if you shop around.

Re: Jewellers - Gold Prices

Is there an official 'mark' to indicate gold quality? How do you know what you are buying?

There is nothing like the UK assay system, but then most other countries think UK 9karrat gold is more or less of no value just overpriced. You will find most gold here has the numbers 14, 18, 22 and 24 stamped on it. Any good jeweler here will be able to tell you what your gold is.

At the moment gold has a very high value hovering around the 1,000 to 1,100 dollars an ounce, now would be a good time to sell any broken, old or things you don't wear anymore. My wife has an occasional clearout and then buys new bits

Re: Jewellers - Gold Prices

Yes theres a official mark on Turkish Gold , but in England its different ...because its stamped in Birmingham Sheffield London Edinbrough ...etc , and each city has its own little sign , ....Having said that i expect the prices of the english gold would be for 9ct ..we don't have 14ct ....our gold is 9ct 18ct 22ct the higher the gold content the higher the price , Turkeys gold starts at 14ct and then 18ct also 24ct which is pure gold , ....Brass is added to make pink gold copper for yellow gold ..and silver for white gold ..White is often more expensive than coloured gold has silver is the most expensive metal added , ..haggle a bit but the prices reflect the ct remember to include the workmanship involved ...Most of it is on a sale or return basis from Istanbul Warehouses , Babsgood don't worry you would not have got the prices quoted here for your gold , these a " new prices " and often refer to the price of gold bullion , not jewellery !!! we get scrap price for our old gold , its not the good investment people think it is , Only bars of bullion is an investment for multi millionairs and countrys to put money into , ..I took a ring recently to several shops because i never wore it ...insurance value £3,500 ...4 shops wouldn't buy it and 1 offerd £300 !!! Diamonds are very down right now so i put it in the auction and it made £1,600 Items can make more in auctions if thier nice but for our odd earings etc its scrap .............Diane .........ps i "helped in a jewelers in marmaris " ....

Re: Jewellers - Gold Prices

If anyone could suggest a jeweller I would still be greatful. THnak you for all your replies and knowledge.

Does anyone know how much I should be paying? I know the price of pure gold bullion but if anyone could help with jewellery, please do.
