WE lived in Didim for 6 years

Well as quite a few of you know me and Susan, we moved to Didim/Altinkum in November 2007 and left in July 2013 almost 6 years. We lived on Oasis village next to Marina road, there were 2 other English couples who lived there and still do. We landed in the early morning to a really heavy thunderstorm and were taken to the village by car. We struggled with the locks to the rented apartment but got in eventually, it was cold nothing like what it was in June.

In the morning we looked out to see a sea of mud surrounding us, what have we done? we did not expect this.

There were many things to sort out residency permit being the main one, we hired a car and went to Kusadasi to pick up our guide to take us into the mine field of police stations and tax offices in Aydin.

We took many people to Aydin over the years for there RP's then later when it moved to Didim we took people to get there Turkish driving licences.

In 2012 Susan had a bad fall and had to have surgery at Didim, I was not so lucky I started with a burst appendix in December 2012 and there were complications, at this time we decided to come back to the UK as soon as I was fit to travel.

We moved back to UK on 5/6 July 2013.

I had been over in May to find us a place to live and furnish it, it was a one bed flat in Almondbury Huddersfield, but have since found a much better one in Golcar Huddersfield, We are both fine now and are better off financially than we were in Turkey, (no hospital bills for a start) we did what we had dreamed of which many still says to us I would love to do that ( So what is stopping you) we saw more of our kids than ever we did living in UK.

In all we enjoyed our time in Turkey, but it's nice to be back in UK, Do we miss it, sometimes, but until the Turkish government sort them selves out, we will stay here. Take the RP fiasco for one.

Re: WE lived in Didim for 6 years

Hello Glynne, I remember yourself & Susan from when you used to holiday in Kuşadası all those years ago. I had the Salt Box Restaurant then and you had many an Efes with my then husband Celalettin. Time moves on and I'm happy that you've settled well back in Britain and that both your health problems are sorted.

Personally, I would never consider moving back into Britain as Turkey has been my home now for more than 18 years and will be till my end. My day to day living and economic situation is far better than it ever was in Britain, my daughter moved out here permanently just over 7 years ago and I now have a fabulous 4 year old grandson, he's a real character! He has the easy come, easy go attitude from the Hippyness of myself and Sally but at the same time, never forgets to tell us that he's Koçaman Turk!

I never liked the Political situation in Britain whilst I was living there, the Political situation isn't great over here but tell me where it's perfect?
Look around the world, everywhere has its problems but if you choose to settle somewhere for life as I have done, you have to take the good with the bad, overiding the bad bits as best you can.

The Pro's of living in Turkey by far outweigh the not so good bits for me as long as I keep things mentally in proportion.

Re: WE lived in Didim for 6 years

Celalettin, I have only seen him once in Altinkum when he was building Palm wings resort but that must be 4 years ago.

You will remember Thelma and Gary we used to holiday with back in 03/04/05 well they have not been abroad since then the got a Caravan at Skegness.

Are you still in the office near the roundabout, he seems to be doing ok in the SB not been since late 2011.

anyway take care Anne

Re: WE lived in Didim for 6 years

Yes Glynne, I remember Thelma & Gary. Fancy them trading in foreign travel for a caravan in Skegness, each to their own and as lovely as Skegness can be, I know where I'd rather be.

Sebahattin and Yusuf are still in the office near Kuşadası Belediye roundabout as you remember but we opened an office down in Side on the South Coast some 7 years ago and I moved down here to live. My apartment is less than 100 yds from the sea, uninterupted views as there's only greenery and a few olive trees between me and the water........lovely!
Having said that, as & when we have customers looking to buy on the Kuşadası side, I get in the car, get over to the West coast, do the job and catch up with old friends at the same time.

Old habits die hard so I always make time to spend an evening with Celalettin and a couple of other long-standing Turkish friends for a few games of Okey. Celo's fine, officially he's retired now but occasionally we still find him at the wheel of some great digger.

Take care, enjoy yourself.

Re: WE lived in Didim for 6 years

Nice being in Side, we had a holiday in Belek in 2012 and when for a day out in Side. Did the Disney ever get built in Belek? I suppose not. Do you drive to Kus? and do you take the D400- E87 to Aydin or the coastal road D350- D400 to Akyaka then the D550 to Kus?

Do you remember me posting this

Re: WE lived in Didim for 6 years

Fabulous pictures Glynne, I remember them well and I've been to all of them over the years.
My favourite place from those you show is definately Olympus, Peaches on the beaches, no cement or concrete buildings allowed, etc. Beautiful although I still maintain that the most relaxed place I've been to in Turkey is Nemrut Dağ. There's nothing there apart from the History and it was so peaceful...Luuuurvly!

I do drive from Side to Kuşadaı. Side-Antalya-Denizli-Aydın then over the back road to Kuşadası. An easy 495kms, leave home about 4.30am, leisurly breakfast just outside Denizli and I'm in Kuşadası by about 11am. Settle in and I'm all ready for an afternoon's work.

Way to go!!
