Question Should we allow more adverts on TLF?

Should there me facility for more advert type of posts?

As TLF gets more and more popular we are getting lot of small businesses like bars, restaurants handymen etc. wanting to advertise their services and events on the forum to let people know about them.

At the moment only paid banner adverts are allowed, but I think there are many more people who want to advertise but can't or won't pay for a banner, I think there is a need to share news about things going on in various areas but how do we control abuse of facility?

In the past we have had many people join post an advert and never return. So they don't actually add anything to the forum but use the popularity to get business, for this reason I don't allow any free adverts because I fear that we will get too many free adverts without any contribution in money or content from these people.

Now the new season is upon us, we have already started to get new members who want to post about their company or services, but without paying.

Maybe we need a tiered charges system for classified type of adverts and banner adverts for bigger companies? Because I feel companies making money from the forum should contribute towards the costs.

Any suggestions how it could work without turning the forum into a free classified website?

They definately need to be charged, otherwise we will be bombarded with adverts.
Also need to have a specialist advertising forum, and not allowed to advertise on any other threads.

Re: Should we allow more adverts on TLF?

if you are to go down the road of letting local businesses advertise for free , you could do it on a maximum period say 4 weeks for free.and then if they get a response they may want to pay for a full advert. Also can adverts be just on the appropriate forums , like for me when i go to Akbuk forum , it would be good to see adverts of what bars etc are doing offers or specials etc.

Obviously as members if we use the services advertised we would have to ensure we mention TLf .

thanks

Re: Should we allow more adverts on TLF?

In my opinion you will be bombarded with cowboys just touting for business.

You are also likely to get a bucket load of solicitors providing all sorts of legal services many for which they are not qualified to do. One example being Wills.

There would be no control over the expertise/qualifications for tradesman eg electricians and they could endanger the lives of others.

If in the event you do go down this route then maybe they make a first post of their qualifications, what services they are offering , general costs and some references from satisfied customers whereby they could be checked out, then at least members can comment on their prices etc.

Re: Should we allow more adverts on TLF?

what does the average member want from the forum? - if they are like me its about information and a bit of interaction

What does the average guest want? - probably information

so does either group want lots of adverts ? - possibly not - but as I get all the information and interaction for free I guess I am just a little bit selfish as I dont contribute any cash to the upkeep of the forum

It seems then that paid adverts are the price I have to pay in order to get the forum for free. And if I pay then I could avoid the adverts (I think that is how Hotmail etc work - if you pay you dont get the annoying pop ups)

giving people free adverts would not be a commercilly viable option.

Re: Should we allow more adverts on TLF?

Maybe you could offer a small shared scroll window as a taster to those smaller entities that want some advertising space. It would come with limitations, for example for how long and how often they advertise.

If they get a positive result from the taster then they may consider it worthwhile paying for the next one, if the audience is not responding then they will probably go away.

Paid adverts are a fact of life, you already have them, a few more will not detract from what is a very successful format.

Classified Ads (to be paid for) sounds like a plan! Helen xx

Re: Should we allow more adverts on TLF?

Hard question to answer as we have members who more or less advertise some businesses.

On a Kusadasi Forum they have a "Local" forum and it's used by businesses who don't want to pay for a banner or high-profile ad so they pay a minimum amount to have a thread opened on their behalf giving their details, a few photos etc, then people can then add to the thread if they want info, reviews etc. Could that same concept work here?

Re: Should we allow more adverts on TLF?

Advertisements could be added to the signature part of a post that way the only way the advert would be seen is if they contributed to the forum. A small charge could be put in place for setting the advert up but as the advertiser posts to the general forums and offers advice etc the pay back would be that their advert gets seen more.
