Turkey's Antalya Tops Other Touristic Cities In Mediterranean Basin
Published: 4/29/2008
ANTALYA - A Turkish city had topped other touristic cities in the Mediterranean basin, a Turkish tourism expert said on Tuesday.
The chairman of Europe-Turkey Tourism Business Council said Antalya, a city in south Turkey, became the leader of other Mediterranean cities attracting tourists this year.
"There has been almost thirty percent rise in bookings for hotels in Antalya this year," chairman Huseyin Baraner told AA correspondent.
Baraner said Antalya deserved the title of "the shining star of Europe" in tourism this year, and told the AA that this Mediterranean city expected tourists particularly from Germany, Russia, Ukraine, the Netherlands and Romania.
"This season, around 900 planes will take off and land at the international airport of Antalya," Baraner, who is also the adviser to German tour operator TUI, said.
More than 7 million tourists visited Antalya in 2007, and more than 1 million tourists arrived in Antalya in the first four months of 2008.
The number of tourists visiting Antalya is expected to be over 9 million this year.

Hmmm....I wonder why, we love the old town and harbour but the city as a whole [hole?] just doesn't appeal. Oh, some great music pubs but, again, in the old town.

Obviously it's to the German, Russian, Ukrainiun, Dutch and Romanian tastes,
but surely it can't be that bad G F.

Re: antalya top city in the Med
I dispute this finding
Uzumlu rules!
Our "city", cunningly disguised as a vey small village, is much nicer. Plus we now have a butcher and a phone box

According to today's Turkish Daily News, the Alanya area of Antalya is the most popular place for foreign property purchases. Here's a link to the article:

Re: antalya top city in the Med
I lived in Antalya for 5 years we have now moved away.
For us, Antalya was too big and too busy, fantastic for shopping, good prices and a good range of places to eat. but every-one to their own taste.
The Belediye and other authorities involved have done a fantastic job through-out the city. Building new and upgrading parks. A lot of this has been done in residential areas well away from the tourist beat. Pavements are being re-laid and roads resurfaced. You still get free step reebok when you cross the roads.
The old dolmuses are being phased out and spanking new urban buses are being put in their place.
Unfortunately the new metro is causing chaos in some areas but when it is finished it will be a great asset for the city.
Uzumlu is a village covered in cement dust about 15 kms or 20 minutes from Fethiye.

Re: antalya top city in the Med
As you can see from my profile we live in Antalya. Well, about 25minutes out in what was a village but now it's more like a small town.Having said that we are not going anywhere. We like where we are,we like being able to visit Antalya centre whenever we want and we like being able to jump in the car and visit Alanya. Not to far away and a very nice place. As Apollo has stated the local council have spent loads upgrading the infrastructure and the new metro will be a fantastic asset to the city.Ten years ago the council stated that there aim was to make Antalya as Internationally recognised as Nice.Personally I think they have gone down the correct path.At the moment it's got everything going for it, massive increase in flights ( We live under one of the flight paths ) and new hotels. All are five star and really are five star.Antalya is the jewel in turkeys med coast.
