bacon?

Just thought, I noticed a lot of people take each other bacon over to Turkey. Is it unuvailable due to religious beliefs? If so, I take it they don't farm pigs there then?

Jackie, suprisingly there is a English pig farm in Izmir that sells to a lot of restaurants around the Aegean Coast.

Bacon or any pig product is not to be consumed by anyone of the Islam/Muslim faith.

As you say, a lot of people bring bacon over. The way to do it successfully is to freeze it in smaller packs, then the day you are coming over, wrap each packet in kitchen foil to contain the cold. You can also do the same with English butter which is also unavailable here.

Interesting. I did wonder when I saw bacon being mentioned so often by ex pats. We eat the "pretend" bacon, think it's mushroom based. Tastes brill but doesn't smell as good as frying "real" bacon.

Theres shops dedicated to selling UK products that arent generally available here in many of the major tourist areas and they make a very good living I might add!

They sell to hotels, restaurants and to ex-pats.

Yep Jackie my mate usually brings over a few pounds of bacon for her turkish friend's cafe for the tourists to eat. Packed in a cooler bag.

There is a pork production place in the Fethiye area as well, it is called Porklands I think. They do produce bacon but I have read that it tastes a bit different because of the curing process.

They make nice ham though Teresa! Also do a damn fine duck and some pretty nice smoked salmon....

They deliver all over the place and have another outlet in Kusadasi <Grin>

That is worth knowing, I think I could miss nice ham. Bacon and sausages are not the be all and end all for us we don't eat that much of it and I had already said that if we got to the stage where we really fancied the stuff we could just go for a breakfast a local cafe as a treat.
