life in turkey

Im trying to find an answer to this question . Im 63 and retired on health grounds being over 60 and having had one heart attack no one wants to employ me so im in early retirement recieving pension related credits , my question is if i wanted to leave the uk and live in turkey full time what i loose from my pension money ? I know i wouldnt get cold weather payments no problem there as its not that cold in bodrum but would the make a reduction in my basic payment ? Which is a struggle to live on in the uk but ok for life in turkey

Re: life in turkey

I just checked the winter fuel allowance page and it would appear that you can still claim it if you were entitled to it prior to moving. Look it up in case I read it wrong.

Re: life in turkey

Hello Funlife, in answer to your question......you will not receive....Any Pension Credits, my wife and I got an extra 16/week they told us we would lose that.....also as you said you will not get the cold weather payments nor will you get the Christmas bonus 10 or 20 whatever it is believe it or not. You will just receive the basic pension plus any extra on top that you have paid for.

You will receive the yearly increase every April. What you need to do is ring the International Pensions Center in Newcastle and they will give you all the info you need...sorry have not got the number now but you will get it off Directories.

If you look on the Directgov website under winter fuel allowance it does say that you may still be able to claim.

If you maintained a UK address, like thousands of other expats throughout the world, you wouldn't lose anything.

One of tyhe first lessons learned in Turkey is that it is bloody cold here in winter, shocks a lot of people. Its a short but cold winter and you should allow for it with heating costs whilst here.,

Re: life in turkey

So long as you have paid your "stamp" for 30 years you will get the full pension when you reach retirement age.

Re: life in turkey

Hi again Funlife, it sounds like you are a single person and as such you could live reasonably cheaply certainly more cheaply than in the UK.

You would need to live a "normal" life and not as a tourist cos of course eating out, smoking and booze all the time add up very quickly.

I don't know if you own a house or not or if you have plenty of cash banked, if no cash to speak of.....well it could mean selling up to live here permanently and renting an apartment here which can be fairly cheap compared to UK rental prices....something like 450liras/mth maybe and using 2.50liras to the pound is around 180.
On top of this would be electric, water, (monthly paid) and day to day living for yourself....say 120/week@2.5=300liras per week.

Getting a job here is out of the question as you will need a work permit, so unless you are a Nuclear scientist or a proffesor in Quantum Physics I would forget about it.
Getting caught without one means instant deportation.
