Venomous Snakes

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if there are any venomous snakes in Turkey. As last year we had a Black snake in the garden which was about 4ft long.

Also a friends husky dog died shortly after going for a walk with his owner, vet apparently said it could have been a snake bite.

Thanks

Re: Venomous Snakes

Yes there are venomous snakes in Turkey. Some of them are big and some are small. I don't know the english names of them though as I am far from a snake expert. They live mostly in the south and the east parts of Turkey.

Re: Venomous Snakes

Our Turkish neighbours have warned us to beware of an ugly black thing a few inches long that looks too big to be an insect and too small to be a snake - more like a fat black centipede with twice as many legs and antennae sticking out of its head. Just thinking about it gives me the shivers.

Re: Venomous Snakes

We have a Villa in Kalkan and when clearing rocks in june last year to build a wall came across a very large snake. About 4ft and darkish grey. Didnt hang around too long to check details. Local builders didnt seem to know much about snakes but would be very interested to know if they are venomous as was in an area where the kids play. I assume we disturbed it under the rocks.

On a similar subject have seen several scorpions and dont know whether these are venomous. Any advice from naturalists out there very welcome.

Re: Venomous Snakes

Hi Guz.

We had several huge brown ugly centipede looking things in our villa when it was first built. Our turkish neithbour told us that they give you a nasty bite.

Everytime we go out to our villa I do a bed check!!! just in case.

Re: Venomous Snakes

Yes the scorpions are venomous as well. Not sure what the other ugly black thing could be but I would stay away from it.

Re: Venomous Snakes

Evidently there are 53 different types of snake in Turkey of which 2 are poisonous. One is the Viper.

I found this which might explain more:
