Which health insurance company for expats?

I finally got my residence permit, and just in time before my expensive worldnomads insurance runs out!

So Im wondering, which health insurance do most of the expats use here?

Im 26 years old, just got my 1 year residence permit but am not working or officially studying, will be based in Izmir from next month. Most important thing to me is that it is cheap.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Which health insurance company for expats?

SGK is the most effective one for turkish locals, seems some expats are using it too.

For my private health insurance i use AXA, helps me around all around the world.

You cannot apply for the Turkish SGK till you've held your R/P for 12 months.

As you're young (and unless you're married or have a young family); even if you could get SGK, it's probably not worth it in your case (for a year it would cost more than full private cover through insurance).

Most of the Turkish insurance companies have a good reputation. Have a look at the report here: 2011 Health Insurance report, I would recommend you email a few and get some quotes, then compare cover and go from there.

Also bear in mind that you could just get the basic level of private insurance cover for around 300-600TL per year; just make sure you're fully aware of what it does (or doesn't cover).

Dave.

Re: Which health insurance company for expats?

The missus and I have MAPFRE Genel Yasam for hospitalization only. It covers everything with no limits in the hospital for treament. We pay 2000 TL a year for it, 1,000 each, that includes a family discount. We have been with them for 5 years now, and we are both over 50. I also have a private plan from Canada for all non hospital related doctors, tests, prescriptions. My sister in law has a very good plan with AK Sigorta, as Dave said, shop around, there are many good companies here in Turkey offering policies, you will be sure to find one that fits your needs at this early time in your life and your wallet.

Re: Which health insurance company for expats?

We've used Yapi Kredi Bank insurance when we first came here and knew no better, then changed to Anadolu, but for the last 2 years we've been with Axa as they had the best all round policy and at the most reasonable price. We shopped around most places both here in Turkey and foreign companies but Axa covered a lot more for a lot less money, good luck
