Information about Fethiye, Kas, and Koycegiz

My wife and I moved to Izmir from Canada recently. We're researching and exploring other cities such as Fethiye, Kas, and Koycegiz. We plan to rent a car next week and stay in these 3 cities a few nights to get a feel of the place and if we like them, we'll come back again to explore more.

We're looking for a place with warmer weather than Izmir (Izmir has been quite cold this February); more green places such as forests, large parks, ... for morning runs or evening strolls as opposed to a large city with lots of buildings and shopping malls; a live city so it's not dead in the winter; and finally a city that has a large expat community living there.

I don't like big cities and my wife doesn't like small villages so we hope to find a place in the middle to please both of us. A quick background about us, we're both in our 40s, without children, and working remotely. We're not much into dining or bars, but more into nature, picnic, and outdoor activities.

I'd appreciate if you can recommend good and safe neighbourhoods in above cities, preferably the ones with expat community living there. We plan to live in a sitesi (residential complex) with 24/7 security and a swimming pool. Also, I would appreciate if you can share your experience, views and tips about these cities please. Thanks in advance.

Look at Foca Mah and Akarca in Fethiye - the town and surrounding area(s) will have everything you require.
There is a beautiful new park opposite the Devlet Hospital which borders the coast line and a superb promenade that connects Fethiye town to the more expat resort of Calis that you can run along or cycle.
Having been to the other two and left fairly quickly - although both nice for short visits but lacking sufficient infrastructure - I would adjust your plans to spend more time in Fethiye (Foca Mah or Akarca Mah) - you won’t regret it.

Completely agree with Ian. The Fethiye area is perfect (we think) lot's to do in summer and winter and Calis has lots of expates living there. Winter time is probably the best time to check the places out as you will get an idea as to how quiet/dead it is. Enjoy your exploring. xx

Working remotely, I assume, requires fast internet. You should check before you buy as the speeds can vary considerably, from Vfast Fibernet, to Mbps in just single figures, even within the same town.

Thanks for your suggestions. Do you suggest us to stay in Sunset Beach Apartments or in a hotel for a couple of days?

Hopefully you will try out Alanya. It has everything you could wish for now. 15 years ago it didnt. There's a good expats community there if you want it offering lots to do. There is the busy part in Alanya Centrum and villages surrounding it some more remote and others with easy access to transport or good roads to drive on. Good beaches, eateries, entertainment, good shopping areas in popular places. Konakli, Türkler, Avsullar, Mahmutlar, Oba. All on the coastal road. Hospitals, cinema, swimming pool. Everything if you need it.

We were in Alanya and Mahmutlar in 2015 for 2 months in January and February and although we loved it for vacation but not for longterm. Thanks for suggestion though.

Your welcome. Although things have changed so much in 5 years mostly due to the new Mayor. Good luck with your search.

If they are the ones near Jiva beach resort (?) personally I wouldn't stay there because it's a little far out. Move closer the the Remer Hotel it's more central for Calis and Fethiye. xx

Re: Information about Fethiye, Kas, and Koycegiz

I am not too sure Koycegiz is for you Matrixca7, what do you currently know about Koycegiz that made you include it in your list?

You say you are into nature, picnic, and outdoor activities, well you certainly could not choose better, then you go into wanting a large expat community, sorry to disappoint but there isn't one, there is a small one (that's why I live here).

It never Snows in Koycegiz and nothing shuts here, everything is the same all year round. We don't have curry or indian restaurants, we don't have a bar street, and we certainly don't have big sitesi (residential complex) with 24/7 security and a swimming pool in the way I think you are thinking.

If you are into nature then Koycegiz is ideal, if you are too frightened to give up city living luxuries then I would give Koycegiz a miss.

Working remotely or watching internet UK TV is no problem; Koycegiz Net is really great, I can't fault him to be honest and I have been with him since he started and watched him grow.

Are you wanting to buy or rent, you did not mention? I would suggest booking a hotel for 2 or 3 nights and doing a recce before making any plans.
