Question How's life with the "COVID-19" changes?

Thought I ask folks to share what's changed for them since COVID-19 starting kicking everyone around. :-)

Here in the Middle East, things started slow with the changes. We mostly watched China take the brunt of it & then *boom* outta nowhere Iran began sending home the infected.

Now, Restaurants are closed, along with outdoor cafe's/sheesha lounges, movie theater's, and malls have self regulated their times between 10AM-8PM (down from the usual 12AM or 1AM). If you want to eat out, you have order-in.

We've limited our outdoor trips too. And yes, local grocery stores have seen their share of customer hoarding. I've witnessed women piling on bottles of cooking oil, and rice bags onto two loaded shopping carts.

Qatar Airways has laid of 1200 workers from Philippines. One of major labor camps in Qatar is under lockdown because of a COVID-19 breakout.

Emirates Airlines (UAE based) has asked pilots to take unpaid leave.

Saudi has closed borders to all GCC nations. I know folks who use to commute to Saudi for work & live in neighboring countries are stuck in Saudi (if they want to continue working), while their families are across the border.

Strange times...who woulda thunk it!.....

I am sure that the Diwaniyah culture will survive. Must be the dirty foreigners who have the disease, can't be the pure Gulf Arabs. I lived there for many years and saw it and heard it so often.

Re: How's life with the "COVID-19" changes?

Here in Didim it's pretty quiet, went out yesterday for essentials and bank, where the security guard was only letting a few people in at a time
There have been pictures on facebook of Didim municipality spraying all along the front and some major roads , as well as spraying all bank frontages and wiping down ATMs, including the keypads
The supermarkets are well stocked and people are sensible and keeping their distance from one another although pictures of the big Saturday market show crowds of people (we didn't go)
Our local health centre has precautions in place (hand sanitiser and masks ) and one of the local chemists has a plastic red and white striped plastic ribbon across the counter area so people can't lean on the counter

There are a couple of local bars doing a takeaway service but we now eat in all the time (Kath is a brilliant cook! )

We are a collection of 3 villas each with it's own gate and pool , the neighbours on one side (Turkish) are a nice family but haven't come this year so far , on the other side is an elderly German Turk and his German wife (again brilliant to get on with)
We are lucky in the fact of we have a huge ground floor patio and a top floor patio as well so won't be sweltering indoors when the heat comes

You're absolutely right...however, when the price of oil dips, so do the "lofty-better-than-thou" attitudes take a dent.

And would you just look at that oil barrel drop, Brent crude is trading at $27.81.

I've witnessed several government expenditure & general attitude changes (some positive, some negative) since the oil slid in 2016. But generally speaking, realizing one's financial vulnerability has caused some hard coconuts to crack a little, if you know what I mean. ;-)

And in other news....Kuwait has imposed a nation-wide curfew, while asking all expat. teachers to leave (yet more prejudice). Saudi has placed the region of Qatif in blockade, preventing anyone from exiting. Qatif is where all Saudi returnees reside, those who returned from Iran recently.

UAE has shuttered all malls, restaurants, etc. Imagine the financial toll on a place where tourism is bread-n-butter for the economy.

Me too we had positive interest in the house and flights booked (6th April)for a 45day trip to sort out the Turkish end

Now with a collapse of the economy looming I dont know if it will still be feasable

I know its so selfish to think this way but we were weeks away from retirement dreams being a reality and having waited 56 years for it and being robed of it by Brexit last year it was a bitter pill to swallow having it snatched away from us again

Re: How's life with the "COVID-19" changes?

Thank you for sharing. No, not selfish at all to think like that. We have our small worlds and try to manage the best we can.

Our Turkey plans have been a thrown a major curve ball too. And it came out of nowhere! Talk about the twilight zone!

Today, Saudi Arabia passed as the country with the highest rate of infections in the Middle East. Across the border, Qatar has a major pandemic on their hands & they were not prepared for it. Bahrain has instituted a closure of all non-essentials businesses.

The world is in turmoil and the rabbit hole keeps getting deeper....

Stay safe!

Yes, lots of folks with lots of shattered plans at the moment, but hang on in there, for all we know it may turn out to be a blessing in disguise, though heaven knows what at the mo.
