Which currency
We will be going out to fully furnish a 2 bedroom appartment in the new year and we are at a bit of a loss which currency to use.
We could take a few thousand in £ with us or transfer either to YTL or Euros. Although I understand that if I transfer in Euros then I may have to convert these again to YTL and I dont know which is the best way to go.
We would also appreiciate any guestimates as to what the total amount we need may be,This would be to a reasonable standard.
Any advice please.
Barry

Re: Which currency
Hi we furnished our appt in Oct to a decent standard staying away from sofa beds and going for the comfort we required. It cost us about £3500 including white goods ,crockery etc.You can pay a lot less it depends what you want. We paid in Sterling and the shops were happy to take that or YTL. Some actually prefer sterling as they will exchange it when the rate is high and therefore make more profit

Re: Which currency
I would suggest you take sterling, as most places seem to prefer it, and you should get a better deal using cash.

Re: Which currency
I would have thought a lot less than that, nearer £2500. If you are going to Altinkum there isa good shop with a trustworthy owner who might be worth looking up. It's called Site Mobilya and the shop is on Ataturk on the opposite side of the road to Gima/Carrefour but further down towards the beach. We bought some of ours from there over two years ago now and they were much cheaper than other shops.

Re: Which currency
Open a Nationwide account, put your money into that and either pay by debit card or draw cash out of an ATM, you won't be charged by Nationwide for the privelege of using your card abroad. This is how we did our furnishing binge we got as good a rate or better as well.

Re: Which currency
Agree on that, we changed to nationwide two years ago for that reason and you can draw money out as and when and the rate you get is very good. You won't know it though until you get your statement.

Using Nationwide Internet Banking you usually know within 48 hrs depending on the day you draw the cash. Wife is Nationwide customer and has being doing this for a few years now, by far the best way as you also get commercial rate of exchange instead of tourist.
Nearly forgot, the system works but you have to watch your daily drawing limit. Here in Spain the ATM's seem loathed to give you more than €300 per transaction. So if Turkey is the same you need to watch.

Re: Which currency
Thanks for the Nationwide tip, Our next job is to open an account.
I am pleasantly suprised about the money we will need to spend on our furnishing (I guess we get used to paying British prices)

Re: Which currency
Talkinman, make sure you ask to open a Flexaccount, this is the only account that gives the privileges mentioned. We us our flexaccount this summ er and managed to get 2.6 ytl to the pound.
Best of luck, Steve, AKA Akasya.

Re: Which currency
Unfortunately the rate fro the £ against the Lira has gone down since the summer it's around 2.37 ytl to the pound. The Nationwide Flex account is a good way to pay using the debit card, that's what I do for bulk shopping over here. We furnished two years ago and used sterling then, the shops were happy with that. Good Luck. Gill
