Little bit worried

Hi Guys
I went in the IS (sorry english keyboard) on Friday where i bank and was told they can no longer deal with us on the 1st floor for cash transactions only to do transfers.
When i asked why they informed that everything is changing there and the 1st floor is now being used to give people credit.
To say it was busy up there was a understatement.
There must have been at least 15 different people (single/couples) up there all being given loans..
This has made me really uneasy as i came away thinking how safe is this bank as they are lending so many people money.
Is this the norm now in all banks, how safe is this bank if its giving such good interest rates and also lending out our money to others.
Are some banks safer than others, is the goverment banks the safest and if so what banks are these...
Anyone that could give me advise on this would be a great help..
Cheers

The İŞ Bankası is a government bank well established and as safe as banks are anywhere in the world these days..
ive been with them for 14 years and had no problems.
everybody has their own preferences of course ..im sure that you will get a lot of advice which is best etc...
There are different days for handling different transactions, could be you hit a busy day.

Re: Little bit worried

Actually the IŞ Bank is not a Government bank although it does seem to be percieved as such by many.

It was the first Turkish Bank and was set up with the authority of Ataturk.

Ataturk transferred his holdings to the CHP on his death and it was a sizeable chunk of about 28% I think.

Re: Little bit worried

If you can avoid it never go to an İş bank on a Monday or Friday as they are always busy. In fact most banks tend to be busiest on these days but as İş bank is so popular it is magnified, at least this has been the case in the 3 places I've lived here.

ok..its not a ''Government bank'' but because of its ties with Ataturk it has a special standing with the Government and as such is protected by them.

I would guess you are right, because if anything happened to IŞ I would imagine there would be big trouble for Turkey.

Hi Shirley,

I was told by a member of staff at the IS, that it is a co-operative bank.
