Thanks for the vocabulary lesson.

Ian wrote he pays 1000 pa (per annum?) for SGK which is about 345 TL monthly.
As I understand SGK, that 345 TL monthly would also cover a married couple of foreigners in the plan?

Ian also wrote: "after 65 is not going to increase my premiums" is this true for an over 65 year old new to SGK?
As Im not ın the SGK(dont know where ın my post that says I am)I wouldnt have a clue, but I wouldnt argue wıth the begınnıng of your post.

Re: Health Insurance

Ian 10 years ago when getting ready to move over to Turkey I asked my GP to arrange a full check up knowing that in Turkey my NHS contributions would be worthless. I came out with a clean bill of health which I was pleased with.

My wife who had been working in the UK for 20 years found that her SSK cover as it was then was incomplete and we decided to pay the shortfall. Boy are we glad that we did. Apart from giving her a full pension we were able to append my name to the cover. Apart from cuts and bruises during my childhood and working life and one spinal operation at 35 I have enjoyed rude health.

A couple of years into our stay here I cut my foot in the garden and it would not heal. It progressed into a blistering rash over my whole body. My GP sent me for an x-ray at the local Devlet hospital. The upshot was a cancerous node removed from my bladder and an angiogram . Over the period I have had many visits to the hospital including dentistry and eye tests. The eye tests resulted in the two cataract procedures earlier this year but they were at the Acibadem but we had to pay for that treatment.

The bladder operation was followed up by 6 monthly cystoscopy examinations. A blood test associated with the last one a few weeks ago has shown a high and increasing rise in PSA levels. My specialist has advised that I should have a biopsy carried out to see if it is cancer.

Oddly enough I have an appointment at the Acibadem this afternoon as the nearest SGK option for this procedure is Izmir. Reading ShirleyBurly’s story has given me real hope and I hope for the best results for her husband too.

Ian, you were paying NH subs in the UK all your life and it has all gone down the drain since you now live here. What you paid in the UK was likely twice what you are paying now. My advice to you, for what it is worth is keep up the subscriptions…. You’re worth it.

I extend my best wishes to all sufferers on the forum, may you all see out your allotted days.

Re: Health Insurance

Just as an addendum to my previous post.
I am back from my visit to the Acibadem hospital. Sadly the specialist I saw is unable to perform such a biopsy and so it's back to the drawing board.
My consultancy fee was 100TL which was returned to me so no bones broken. Just as a point of interest, the fee for a private patient would have been 320TL so there is an advantage to being SGK.

Re: Health Insurance

What is the best option if you are 65 and intend to spend stretches of three months of a time in turkey ? Is SGK only for permanent residents?
Thanks, Eliza

If you are a UK resident I think you can get travel insurance for extended trips. Try an Insurance Broker or Age UK (for example) Travel Insurance designed for the over 50s | Age UK

SGK is not available to visitors

Re: Health Insurance

ME don't misunderstand what I am going to say because I am not being rude.
You tell us you are married to a Turkish lady, I don't want to ask you questions you might not want to answer so I will just say, get her to go to the office of the authority that deals with SGK matters. You are over 70 so you must be getting a pension from somewhere unless of course you are a millionaire. If your wife was to get a pension as my wife does, you can be piggy-backed onto it and get all the benefits.

Going back to your first question, the 345TL payment is for a single person or a married couple.

Hey, not rude at all and useful to others, thanks.

We have BOTH been on SGK since the Missus took early retirement years ago. We do not pay premiums into SGK because we are both retired.

I was asking about the 345TL payment for friends who are considering their first Ikamet.

Appreciate the reply.

The premium as of jan 2016 is 395tl which also covers the spouse until they reach uk pension age and are no longer classed as a dependant and have to purchase their own at a further 395tl a month.
I think ian maybe meant that unlike many private insurers the sgk wont hike premiums at the age of 65 due to age and possibilities of illness. However the monthly premium continues to rise usually around inflation rates irrespective of age...normally twice a year but this year limited to one large increase in january due to the 30% rise in the turkish minimum wage on which foreigners premiums are based.
