I think ian maybe meant that unlike many private insurers the sgk wont hike premiums at the age of 65 due to age and possibilities of illness. However the monthly premium continues to rise usually around inflation rates irrespective of age...normally twice a year but this year limited to one large increase in january due to the 30% rise in the turkish minimum wage on which foreigners premiums are based.
So if a UK couple who are both pensioners want to take SGK, they BOTH pay? Yikes! That seems like a lot.

Thank you

These two conflicting posts, mine and villabaris' are the reason that I suggested that your wife should make the enquiries through the right channels, not on a forum!!!!

It's good to know that someone is right for a change, it's not always the case. That is of course, if you are right???

Re: Health Insurance

If the couple comprises two yabanci then it is correct. I don't know if the same applies if one is Turkish. Also I believe that once in the SGK system, it is impossible to come out of it, except at the time of one's death!

I only ever quote from experience gained from the right channels and from personal experience as opposed to hearsay.
The reason I gave this information is that this is exactly what happened in our personal SGK cover. My wife was on my cover but when the Turkish Govt changed the law regarding "dependants" she was excluded from my cover and only found out when she went to hospital for tests and was told she was no longer covered. This was confirmed by the SGK and we were told verbally and in writing that this was now the case that when a foreigner got to UK state pension age they needed their own cover.
The way we got round this - totally legal and following the Turkish rules, is for my wife to take out her own SGK cover and me be part of hers until I reach pension age. I was able to cancel my own as we had joined when foreigners were first able to join, in 2007 and cancellation was allowed.
I know there are some people who will say "this isnt the case in xyz area". All I will say to that is that this is the official SGK case and if both husband and wife are of state pension age and are still on the same cover they will eventually be caught out and may find like us that when they need treatment they are not covered as they have been wiped from the system without notice or notification.
All the information I have given is for foreign married couples and their SGK membership. This may of course be different for foreigners on Turkish spouses cover and vice versa.

It may seem a lot ME ( and it is a huge chunk of a pensioners budget)but try getting a private health insurance policy for a couple of pensioners with pre-existing conditions - remembering that the SGK covers many pre-existing conditions that a private company wouldnt touch with a barge pole - and then try to get private insurance for people in their 70s. Good luck with that one!

As of October 2015 it is possible to leave the SGK scheme if you prove to them that you are longer a RP holder, or you provide proof that you have a valid private health insurance policy which must cover the length of your existing RP (or an annual one if you hold a LTRP) if you are under 65.
