Problems changing sterling to lira

I went to Mugla today to change some sterling to lira. I went to two banks (Ing bank and garanti bank) and both asked for Turkish id along with my uk passport. When I explained that I had no such Id they refused to change the money.

Has anybody else had this problem?

Re: Problems changing sterling to lira

how strange - they wanted to see a Turkish id and a UK passport?

how many tourists will have that combination?

HSBC refused us in Turgutreis even though we are clients of HSBC uk.
Garanti bank were happy to change, passport required as ever, you need one to use the public toilets in Turkey!

Are you sure its was not a translation problem and they were meaning passport or TR ID.

Re: Problems changing sterling to lira

How much were you looking to change? Was it an unusually large sum for a regular tourist?

Re: Problems changing sterling to lira

Dont know if it's still there but there used to be a machine in Marmaris that just took your sterling notes and issued TLs, no hassle. Bet it's gone now.
