HSBC closes my acccount

DHL delivered a letter today from HSBC Turkey advising me that it is closing my account in 30 days. No explanation given.

What a pain in the neck!

I will have to set up a new bank account. Can anyone recommend a bank in Turkey with an English-language website?

Does anyone know what documents are needed for opening an account in Turkey? In particular, is it necessary to have a residence permit (ikamet)?

No you don't need a residency permit - just a tax number - to open a Turkish bank account. I have been with Yapi Kredi for 11 years and they have been great. Last year they even sent me 6 x boxes of free Turkish coffee for being with them 10 years!

Re: HSBC closes my acccount

They did the same to me a few years ago, without any notification (although I hadn't been using it for a while, but the bank card I had was still in date).

I'm not sure if there is a whole lot of difference between the major banks. You'll need your passport and a proof of address such as a utility bill (either in Turkey or another country - you can even print this out from any online statements/bills etc. you have if you don't have any originals). I think you'll also need a Turkish tax number (free from tax office).

You don't need a residence permit, but it won't hurt, and some branches might refuse to open an account without one. If this happens, just go to another bank (or even just another branch of the same bank).

I've been using Akbank for the past while, seem fine, although haven't tried anything too complicated with it.

Re: HSBC closes my acccount

HSBC did the same with us about 15 years back. They told us there was not enough activity on the account, so they were closing it. We have been with Vakif bank ever since with no problems.

We have been with Garanti for many years, highly recommended. they even email me when a time deposit account matures to ask what I want to do with it. English website is very user friendly

Yildez Datša - thanks for this and nice to hear from you.

I think I can cope with Turkish-soeaking cashiers, but an English language website is a must, I think.

I'll take a look at the Yapi Kredi site.

SGA213 - thanks very much for this very helpful advice. I think I'll just confirm with a couple of banks by email if an Ikamet is required for a new account.

Ibrahim - many thanks for this helpful advice. Garanti Bank does sound like a appealing choice. Looking at their website they seem to be targeting ex-pats Turkey.
