Sterling exchange.

Does anyone have any current news on exchanging Sterling for Lira in Turkey?

We tried PTT, they exchanged once, second visit we were given short shrift [different teller]

HSBC refused point blank, even though we are Premium members [UK not Turkey]
Garanti exchanged on production of our Turkish Tax number.

Since these events I recall some posts about requiring the production of residency visas for Sterling exchange.
I am wondering if this is true for all banks or do some just still require a Tax number. ?

maybe because of election they do not. if you go any bank in normal time they change with a lot of interest!
go ziraat you see what I say. or go to doviz but some of them really buy for a low amount. The only dovizes I see change well is the places where a lot of them accumulated for instance istanbul kapali carsi bazaar or izmir bazar or ankara kizilay!
for example if you want to change in ataturk airport you lose all your money!

Re: Sterling exchange.

Never change money in any airport Turkan, all over the world they will give a poor exchange rate. I have never needed to show a tax number for money exchange, just regular ID eg passport. Also I find that the exchange rate in turkey drops from Friday night until the banks open on Monday.

Re: Sterling exchange.

I have just read this. Rather than changing our sterling to TL here (TRNC), we were going to do it over there in Turkey, when we arrive tomorrow. Is there a problem ? xx

Re: Sterling exchange.

Like IA, we've never had a problem.

We withdraw GBP at ATM (several have the GBP option - but they only dispense 20 notes), then take it into the bank and exchange for TL.

Never been asked for residency card or tax No.

Doing this avoids any charges from my UK Bank or Turkish bank

Re: Sterling exchange.

Never had a problem in 13 years living here. Withdraw GBP from ATM and change to TL at the best rate at least twice a month. Never been asked for ID.

Re: Sterling exchange.

We always banked with HSBC in Turgutreis but two years ago they refused us as our account was UK not Turkey, they have since closed in Turg and their last ATM in Turg was out of action for the month we were there. This means if the other banks say hayir then it's a hike into Bodrum, worra pain.
Years ago the Turg Change office had a go at ripping us off, a couple of similarly coloured lower donations slipped in, only a threat of the Gendarmes managed to solve the "error" Last resort only for me.

Re: Sterling exchange.

Hi Mollag, if you are a Premier customer at HSBC in the UK, then you become an HSBC Premier customer worldwide.

I became Premier cust. here in Turkey when we came to live here.Brought Pounds sterling cash, and changed it into liras. The bank manager said you have enough to be Premier customer now. But I had to phone HSBC uk to inform them we were Premier cust. Did'nt need all that much in liras, think it was 60,000 liras then in 2007. Think its 100,00tl now

Anyway rang HSBC UK and told them. The guy said OK I will ring Alanya HSBC to verify it and ring you back. Which he did, and he said "Yes OK, you are now worldwide Premier customers"

So now I just phone HSBC in UK and transfer however much I need. No problem. Butt007

there will be if they are Scottish notes, I seem to remember that earlier this year they were not changing the new plastic notes in some places. Maybe a Fetihye TLFler will help us here.
