Buying TL in the UK

Hi.

Our son is going on holiday in a few days and has been trying to purchase some TL for his holiday. It seems that all the usual outlets in the UK have stopped selling TL. He's tried the Post Office, Tesco, Money shop etc but no one is trading in the Lira. He's very worried that he's going to get there and not be able to access any money-on top of everything else his first day there is Bayram so even the banks are closed for days.

Does anyone have any info please?

Cheers

Re: Buying TL in the UK

get small amount from cashpoint in Turkey..check best card for bank charge.even if a fiver wont break his bank account?
Then go away from seafront there will be loads places that will change sterling to TL at good price (most probably better than you would have recieved in UK
I always took sterling and changed over there as always was a better rate

Re: Buying TL in the UK

This maybe cheaper than drawing from an ATM, until he gets sorted. But where possible would still change over in Turkey.

Re: Buying TL in the UK

Have you tried Asda? If no joy, as per previous advice, suggest using a debit/credit card at an ATM but it generally costs about 4% or 4 per 100 equivalent in Lira but at least you get the bank rate. Failing That- take Sterling in notes and there should be no shortage of bar/shop owners who will assist.
Hope that helps?

Re: Buying TL in the UK

You can withdraw sterling from Garanti ( and other ATM's) if you have a Nationwide debit card for no charge then change to TL in Turkey. xx

Some jewellers do exchange and they all check the daily rate before they make the transaction.

Re: Buying TL in the UK

Hi Folks,

Thanks for all of your replies,

Amazingly even today the big currency exchange offices here in the UK are still not listing TL on the currency lists. The Post Office, Asda, Tesco, Money Shop and even Thomas Cook will not allow you to order any currency.

I think people like to go away with a bit of local currency but it's getting very difficult to find any here.

I'm sure he'll not have any problems on holiday.

I remember being in Turkey in the 90's on 'Black Monday. when the UK markets collapsed. We were staying at a B&B hotel who took pity on us and they changed 10 a day for us-between us! It was awful as the change places and banks would not change our sterling-they would let us draw money from a credit card-maximum 50.

Have you looked at ordering online for collection at the airport? They offer good rates and should have lira from returning travellers as well.
