Re: ATM charges

That is a different scenario to the members talking about charges for taking out of Turkish ATMs with a UK card.
You have opted to decline conversion charges for taking TL from your card and probably believe it was "free" because you declined the ATM charge.
However the hidden charge was in the 7.81 that your card provider gave you as last week the rate was between 7.881 and 7.923.
You obviously opted for the best deal for you.

Re: ATM charges

I am sure your comments will still be helpful to people in the same situation taking TL and trying to avoid major charges.
Everyone not just banks are jumping on the conversion band wagon. Amazon UK have a great moneymaking scheme where if you order items obviously priced in s but are paying with a Turkish credit card they kindly offer to convert the s for you to TL and take 8.3TL per . If you decline and let your Turkish bank convert they only take 7.9TL. Doesn't sound a lot but on 100 its 40tl in your pocket not Amazon's!

Re: ATM charges

Don't even get me started with banks
Last November our daughter got a letter for me from Natwest saying my credit card would be cancelled end of January (when it ran out) as I hadn't used it for quite a while(Our debit cards had already run out, but all we use the account for is to get access to the credit card )

Managed to contact them and they wanted security (obviously), did all that right up to the end bit "Right, now we'll send an activation code to your phone ".....Only problem, we had to change our sims and forgot to change them on the Natwest site, so told them that was not possible as to get into the site and change the number, I had to log on BUT when I did they had put me on restricted access!

(2nd phone call)..Told them all this again , no good they wanted my account number (offhand , can you remember yours?), which was on the statements I got, APART FROM I CANCELLED PAPER STATEMENTS 3 YEARS AGO!

Found out the only way to sort it was for Tracy to request a statement (they wouldn't send one to Turkey), which had the account number(fast forward)..... eventually Traqcy got in with a new card reader and we got all our cards delivered to her
THEN a week later another letter from Natwest saying I had to re- declare my country of residence and provide my Turkish tax number

Eventually sorted all that out , but what a palarver

The "charge" is the fact that whilst you were quoting "the bank rate"what you got was the "best retail" rate as opposed to the wholesale rate (which some cards/exchange companies will offer) or the mid market rate (as published by Reuters/Google and used by TransferWise)changing every few seconds.
Both are obviously higher than the retail rate and whilst may not sound a lot in percentage terms can make a big difference in what you get in real money...hence the difference between 7.81 and 7.88.

Thanks for the heads up Harem. We withdrew sterling from Akbank ATM today using both our Natiowide card and Barclay card and luckily we haven't been stung with charges but it looks like the banks are clamping down. xx
