The CHP Mayor had fought it but it was overturned by Presidential Degree

An area of 1 million 100 thousand square meters on the seafront in Ortakent, Bodrum, was opened for construction by Presidential Decree.

Re: I think bad news for Bodrum and Mugla

Depressingly predictable. I've also heard that the whole Datca peninsula is zoned for tourism development.
Why dont they understand that they are destroying the things that attract tourism?
I see that the deserted holiday village of Varosha in TRNC is also to be opened for redevelopment and the subsequent row has brought down the government there.
Someone somewhere is desperate for money.

Re: I think bad news for Bodrum and Mugla

Same thing happened in Spain, everything built on.

Years ago, chatting to a Fethiye surveyor from Land Registry, he told how all the available coastal land between Fethiye and Patara Beach, currently not building land, has been bought by developers who are waiting for the green light.

Re: I think bad news for Bodrum and Mugla

I passed the article on to a Turkish friend for an opinion.

Back came the reply 'they are selling everything they can because the government and the treasury are broke. The Qataris now own an area of Turkey larger than the area of Qatar'.

Re: I think bad news for Bodrum and Mugla

I think that we now know the reason for many visits to Bodrum from rich Arab leaders on their luxury yachts this summer.

Parts of Turkey are regularly being decimated and completely ruined. This has been upsetting Turks for a good few years now. Some of the before and after photos I've seen in the last few years is heartbreaking. Capitalism rules like everywhere else in the world.

You are not wrong Shash, but many of those Turks own properties in the decimated areas and still complain about over development, I am a member of a few Photographic history forums on facebook so see this all the time, the following really highlights it to me, its not one of my photos rather a 1980s picture from one of the forums, I remember it being still largely like this in the late 80s when the building boom was in its infancy, worth a look on google earth to see it now.

Fact is we are all part of the problem.
