Last Will - will u or won't u?
Blooming heck.
I've been mulling over a will for a while now and found the Turkish system incredibly confusing.
Then I got an email from Motley Crew and actually bothered to read it for a change and it dawned on me we have a similar system in place in the UK. If you don't leave a will anything above a set sum is divided between relatives.
So stop putting it off and do it - or else your hard earned readies might end up with that one relation you always wished you could disown

Just to be nosey how many of us have sorted out our wills?

we have done our wills ,just the bog standard ,he gets everything if i die and vice versa . i know through experience what a nasty time it can be if you don't ! we have got to sort one out in turkey now ,i think the laws are different there ,and the house and everything could just go to the kids if it's not written down . am i right ?

Re: Last Will - will u or won't u?
I will have a look later as going out right now but got a feeling it's a percentage to spouse and bigger portion to kids. Our situ is different cos we have no kids and would have liked to just leave to eachother - but we know even with a will in place the estate is shared despite our wishes but the percentage is better if you get a will sorted.
We don't object to family getting our bits but some are more needy and we would have liked to have a bit more control over our own money!!!!!

Re: Last Will - will u or won't u?
We asked our soliciter in turkey and was told that an English will is quite acceptable in turkey provided any turkish property is accounted ( I Presum named and listed) in the will.
We was also told that it would need to translated intoturkish and accepted at the notery office.
But this was in Bodrum other regions may differ

Re: Last Will - will u or won't u?
This has cropped up several times before and it seems that everyone has different ideas and been told different things. In the Turkish Embassy's web site they also state that a UK will is acceptable but it seems that your relatives will need to jump through a few hoops first. Several on here more or less said that the Turkish Embassy didn't know what they were talking about!! I have an email from them stating that what is written there is correct so I have put that e mail and the paragraphs from the web site with my will. I did try to make a Turkish will at the notary in Datca but the gentleman there was not at all welcoming or helpful so I will need to make a trip elsewhere. I was thinking of Bodrum if anyone could recommend a lawyer who will do the job reasonably and without a fuss.
I actually want to leave my house to my husband and 2 sons in 3 equal shares. That is the sum total of my family - no others to pop out of the woodwork. Does anyone actually know what the share is if you were to die without a will in place?

Re: Last Will - will u or won't u?
The Brit Consulate in Antalya told a group of us that an English will is NOT valid in Turkey. The best bet is to make an English will and have it translated and Notarised in Turkey and you should be ok. Your will must contain provision for the children ( if any ) according to Turkish law.Unfortunately asking advice in Turkey can be dangerous and when given Misleading even by an Advokat. Try to find an Advokat who has made wills for Brits before and knows what he's doing. If you can find one let me know.

Re: Last Will - will u or won't u?
I wonder who is correct then the Turkish Embassy or the British Consulate?
Although of course I will spend the money to ensure my family get what I want them to have, I am amazed at the cost of these services in Turkey. The notary wanted a huge amount of money for what was a very simple will. Many times more than my UK will. He also wanted blood tests and a medical which would have cost yet more money. Is this just a case of fleecing foreigners or do Turks have these huge costs?
