Re: getting a divorce in turkey

I think if you are both in agreement and go to the town where you were married its very quick . A matter of a few days or weeks , as for cost i'm sorry i don't know but Alison should know she'll probably be along shortly ..............Diane

Re: getting a divorce in turkey

thanks so much.

i dont know what to do. we are getting all types of different information. emailed the email address given on the other post about divorce by debbie but she did not give me any information, she emailed me back with information on the lawyer she worked for.

i know that we need the ex to get power of attorney in the uk and send it to turkey but what if she does not do that?

they have been divorced in the uk and we thought it would be as easy as going to visit a lawyer here and showing them the divorce papers from england that we have got translated to turkish.

this is ruining my life and i cant cope and cant move on because he is still married.

also we dont have much money so any advice anyone can give me is much appreciated.

thanks again

Re: getting a divorce in turkey

The UK divorce entitles either party to re-marry in the UK. For either party to re-marry in Turkey then they have to be divorced in Turkey. I assume your boyfriend doesn't have a residence visa for the UK? If he does why not get married there?

Otherwise the cheapest way would be for your boyfriend to persuade his ex to come to Turkey - he should offer to pay - and to have a quickie divorce (and we're talking 5 minutes here!) where both parties agree. There is no quick or cheap alternative if the ex-wife doesn't want to be accomodating.

Re: getting a divorce in turkey

If the couple were married in Turkey then their UK divorce papers must be presented at a turkish court otherwise the divorce is not recognised. The husband would not be able to remarry in Turkey (however I dont know about the UK)....What about contacting the Turkish Consulate and seeing if the divorce papers can be sent there?
The couple have to papers to sign in Turkey for their divorce, so the wife would have to either do it via a lawyer or go herself.

Re: getting a divorce in turkey

thanks to everyone.
i am in turkey with my fiance and no he does not have a resident visa.
i want my marriage to be registered in turkey and the uk so thats why we want divorced in both countries.
any telephone numbers for lawyers would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Yildez, would she need to come to turkey? can she not just send the power of attorney here? there is no way she will come.

they have not been together for 6 years and they are divorced in the uk.

we have translated all the uk papers to turkish.

would be very helpful if there was someone who had been through the same experience.

Re: getting a divorce in turkey

we have been told by a lawyer here that if she does not send power of attorney here it will take 2 years to get divorced and 2 thousand lira?

i know the easiest thing would be for her to send us power of attorney but im not sure if she will. we did ask her to do this in march and she still hasnt done anything.

im happy to live in turkey with my fiance so thats one of the main reasons we want a divorce here.

thanks

Re: getting a divorce in turkey

Sorry Chops, for a quickie divorce she has to be in court with your boyfriend, other wise it's as you've been told - you need a lawyer to serve divorce papers on her and this is a fairly long drawn out affair. However if she refuses to respond after papers are served 3 times, the court will grant a divorce without her consent.
