Cheese

One of the things I miss most is cheese, so far I have not found any Turkish equivalent to cheddar, Brie, Camenbert, or any of the blue ones. I know at a price I can get most of them from the supermarkets but I wonder if there are any Turkish cheeses that I have missed. They have such a wonderful selection of cheese but they all seem to be of the same flavour in varying strength. Or has anyone tried making their own if so I would love the know how.

Re: Cheese

hi Rose..i know how you feel!
Kaşar..the most common cheese around to me is tasteless. Even Eski..mature kaşar.
Tulum cheese is a bit more creamy
i think some of the white cheeses are not too bad especially made from full fat ewes milk.
İ havent seen anthing like Brie etc.
İn Hatay they do make a cheese thats used in künefir a regional dessert..and also in hot semolina...its white and stringy but has no taste of its own.
the cheddar they sell in Migros etc just isnt the same.

Re: Cheese

Ah yes we found one that has a very similar taste to cheddar and it is made at Izmir, next time at the shop will have a look for the name as it escapes me currently.

Re: Cheese

Know exactly how you feel - being vegetarian means that for me cheese fills the protein gap. Friends of ours found a cheese in a tin (don't laugh, its true) in Kippa, and they reckon its the closest thing to tasty cheddar. Don't know what its called but there can't be many cheeses in tins!

Re: Cheese

Im your man, turg or Yalikav market and ask for Bergama cheese from the stalls, have a taste, its as a chedder and it matures in the fridge. It makes a good cheese sauce also.

In BIM in T'reis there is butter in a blue and white (striped, I think) rectangular pack which tastes just like Lurpak. Sorry can't remember its name ....

I'll stay clear of that one then.

I did manage to cheat and got some pilgrims mature the other day.
