Post How to find a English speaking solicitor or law office in Turkey....

I decided to contribute this because very often its the case that if a property purchase does go pear-shaped, and it can/does happen as we have witnessed very recently, it may be a more effective solution to employ the legal services of a Solicitor outside the immediate area of where the conflict has taken place. eg. If I buy a house in Kusadasi and something goes seriously wrong, I am hardly going to consider using a Kusadasi lawyer.

Pursuant to the Legal Services Law and the relevant regulation issued by the Turkish Bar Association, there are a number of restrictions to the legal market in Turkey in terms of advertising and marketing. According to those rules;
  • Law firms cannot be incorporated as commercial entities, but, partnerships among lawyers are allowed.
  • Lawyers, lawyer partnerships or law offices are allowed to have a website with a domain name www.[lawyer or partnership name].av.tr . Non-authorised people cannot own such domain names.
  • Foreign law firms can register in Turkey, however, since only Turkish lawyers can practise Turkish law, those firms have to employ a lawyer registered at the Turkish Bar Association.

You can also contact English-speaking independent lawyers whose service fees are much cheaper than those of law offices. The US and British missions in Turkey provide lists of these accredited solicitors.

Introduce yourself and stick around for a bit, there is always a need for a competent English speaking lawyer, as can be seen by many threads on this forum.
