Re: Paying the owner

1. Go to your Turkish bank.(Assuming you already have TL a/c)
2. Open a sterling a/c with minimum, say £100 in notes.
3. Ask the bank to write down the SWIFT and IBAN numbers for transfer.
4. Go back to your UK bank and instruct them to transfer the relevant amount to the relevant Turkish sterling a/c quoting the confirmed SWIFT and IBAN numbers.

Bring sterling out with you in future, deposit, and move across to TL a/c as needed.

Some UK banks/building societies allow sterling w/d abroad free of charge if you can find an ATM offering £.

Remember that 100,000TL depositor protection applies per person so hold a joint a/c if possible to double it.
Also note that any protection payout is made in local currency, so dont keep too much in sterling.
Some banks pay interest on foreign currency deposits.
If you are a UK taxpayer you must declare interest received abroad. Any tax paid locally will be offset against the UK 20% rate.
The first £1000 interest is taxfree whether UK or offshore but local tax deducted abroad cannot be refunded by HMRC.

Actually there is no charge whatsoever if you withdraw GBP from a number of Turkish banks - from Barclays or the Turkish bank.

Not all Turkish banks offer GBP, and those that do only offer in tourist areas.

I do this every month. Just withdraw GBP from ATM (ordinary limit is 500 and premier is 1000) then take your pounds right into the bank to change... No charges and best rate possible.

Re: Paying the owner

Transferring monies is the easy part, making sure that you get what you're paying for is the trick. Hold all monies until the relative checks are done on the property ie debt free & Iskan.

I wish you well.

I never knew this either! So unless the local atm puts on a charge there is no charge from barclays or Turkish bank. Which arm do you use to withdraw money without a charge?

Personally I always use TEB, but I believe there is a similar arrangement with IS, and there may be others I am not aware of - but remember... It only work when withdrawing GBP (which you then go into the bank and change)
