Disabled access.
Before Moving here, besides working very hard, I was involved in arranging holıdays for People with learning Disabilities and also accompanying them With the care in the community programmes, The old hulking hospitals were and are closing, and more and more are being placed in smaller 4 person purpose converted houses and Bungalows.
These people are also being supported in ordinary life principles.
Now then arranging a holiday was a challenging & difficult thing to do because nearly all the rentals would not be adapted.
I am not talking about just the UK, but world wide. (I took 2 to Istanbul in 1997, and stayed at a hotel.)
I still have contacts in the UK with many people & organisations who are still having difficulty in finding suitable venues.
These days it is no longer a sunshine coach to Bognor, but world wide with Learning disability clients wanting to see sights, senses, smells (Istanbul spice mkt for eg.) and see other cultures and countries.
If any of you, who have a villa on the Rental merrygo round, and have the annual difficulty of letting, want to know more about conversion for disability and risk assesment, drop me a PM. It is a very lucrative mkt today with a shortage of good venues and suitable properties.

Re: Disabled access.
I thought about this in the past, If I were to buy a place in the sun to rent this is the markey I would aim at.
We realised this by looking at the pools most places build, they are big squared pools of a standard height with metal steps into the pool. We noticed that the mother in law who is 72 would never be able to use a pool like that and got to thinking about other difficulties that may be faced.
Its definately worth looking into in my opinion.

Re: Disabled access.
Quite frankly, ıf I had the property, I would do this and have clients prob. most of the year from different NGOs and charities. Because you can still aim at the ordinary mkt as well, and have the best of both worlds. It is something alot of people do not think about, but having been on the team who have to organise these things, I know the potential all too well and believe me for those who are willing to invest more to convert...........very lucrative!

Re: Disabled access.
Phil,
I've copied your comments in an email to a friend who owns a couple of apartments in Ovacik, near Fethiye.
One of them is a duplex, with enough beds for up to 13 guests, and has ramps for wheelchairs / pushchairs. She's been trying to contact someone to give her advise on the changes she needs to make to give access for holidays for the disabled.

Re: Disabled access.
This is a superb idea. I once worked for a Community Care Charity in Scotland and can assure would be renters that such clients would be a joy as customers and would be accompanied by carers and volunteers who would ensure that their property was respected.

Re: Disabled access.
Now then, a stroke of luck. When we formed the company, our accountant put the 'turizm' bit in the articles of association. I questioned this, as at the time I thought it unneccesary. He explained that it was a wise thing to do at formation, in case we had an idea further down the line...........After the PMs and positive feed back, could this also be the birth of 'No-nem Turkish Hols for disabled'?? I have the contacts!
quick quick quick...Beer and sandwiches, Board meeting!!

Re: Disabled access.
Good idea, No-nem. I wish you luck trying to explain to Turkish contractors the concept of a safe wheelchair ramp. We are in the process of having the ramps removed from around our house because they are downright dangerous.

Re: Disabled access.
Our company also has 'insaat' incorporated in it (construction)! We can make proper ramps!

Re: Disabled access.
I know from experience how difficult it is to book a holiday for someone in a wheelchair. One of the reasons we decided to buy a holiday home was that most of the holiday brochures had a get-out clause saying the accommodation wouldn't be suitable for people with disabilities.
Even this year when we booked our holiday in Orlando the Dublin tour operator told us they couldn't let us book any of the places in their brochure because they couldn't guarantee that it would be wheelchair accessible. We had to find our own accommodation on the internet.
Go for it, No-nem.
