Storms and Floods hit Calis

Today has been horrendous! the weather started with blustery gales and wind, but it did not stop there. Calis has flooded and the river has burst its banks, friends of ours are having an awful time, house is totally flooded with brown sludge, at one point were totally cut off from leaving Calis. To top it all we have had a power cut all day, electricity has justed resumed.

the following is an idea of the devastation that has occured. this is after the water level had receded. Fethiye Bay area is now awash with the Browny red sludge.

Water Taxi tide mark
on this side of the bridge the dark watermark on the yellow building shows how far up the water came, however, properties on the other side of the bridge have not been so lucky.

Water Taxi pier now gone!

Re: Storms and Floods hit Calis

Its has been awful here, I do not think that have been any Casualties or fatalities in this area, I was just getting ready to post on the Bodrum Storms, but as we have not had electricity all day and this evening it is a little hit and miss. but the power has now stayed on for over half an hour.

Our friends reported that thier property was waste high at one point, the clean up operation is going to be a pretty mammouth task. Luckily our house appears to have missed the majority of the damage, unfortunately neighbours have not been so lucky.

OMG I can't believe this, I saw on the forecasr that there was going to be heavy rain but I never thought it would be so horrendous. Those poor people but they will getover this but that poor young lady losing her life. My thoughts are with her friends and family.

Thanks for keeping us updated.

I can only reiterate Gail's words, how terrible for all concerned. How far spread was the storm, did it affect Kusadasi? Was it predicted?

I've just phoned my friend in Turgutreis and he said they have had heavy rain but he didn't know about Calis or about the young girl being killed in Bodrum. He said he thinks it's the tail end of hurricane Rita but the weather is forecast good for tomorrow.

Re: Storms and Floods hit Calis

The storm did not seem any worse than those I have seen for the last few years living here, so why has it had an unusual effect.
The Calis "river" is, I think, not a river but a drainage canal, so it is supposed to take the run off on days like today.
Some parts of Calis are barely above the Water Table which will make fast drainage less likely.
These storms will continue for some weeks.

Terrible photographs of Calis and I am pleased it appears that everyone is safe. An awful mopping up job follows but I am positive everyone will rally.

The weather forecast does look good for the next week and temperatures still very high which will hopefully aid the drying out and the water levels. We are going out in less than 2 weeks so we will have to wait and see. This may be where people discover just how good their insurance policies are.
