Re: House wine prices in the Restaurants
Cankaya or Angora for me. No cheap rubbish - you only get what you pay for.

Whether that is true in UK is a mute point, but it is not the case here. You pay as much as restaurants think they can get away with. In UK it was accepted that restaurants charge 50 - 100% over the retail price but here it can be 500% or more.
I have yet to find an 'expensive' Turkish wine that I have been impressed with and I have paid up to 60ytl for the experience. So when I can drink an acceptable wine, that has no pretentions of being anything other than that, for a 3ytl a litre I can put all my snobbish attitudes to wine behind me.
I'm not familiar with the two wines you mention, or their cost, but I would be happy to put these cheap wines up against other Turkish wines that I have paid 20 times the price for and be reasonable content that they will hold their own.
I also know that some restaurants here, that serve wine by the glass, that use this cheap wine and charge more for the glass of wine than they do for the whole 2 litre bottle.

Re: House wine prices in the Restaurants
Cankaya sells in the supermarkets in Kalkan for about 12 YTL, Angora for about 10 or 11YTL. In local restaurants they come in at between 20 and 25 YTL. Both are white wines. At home I tend to go for New World whites, particularly chardonnay and both of these wines could be seen as quite similar to that grape variety - however I am no expert.

Re: House wine prices in the Restaurants
I think I recognise it now, I know it under the manufacturers name - Kavaklidere Cankaya. I have had it, and as you note it is cheap, but I don't think it is better than the cheaper. In fact its red equivalent - Kavaklidere Yakut is not better than the cheaper equivalent. It's all a matter of personal choice after all, but I would encourage you to try the very cheap ones just as an experience.
Back to the topic, any of these wines is fine with a meal. I made the mistake in one beach bar of ordering a bottle of wine without asking the price and the wine turned out to be more than the cost of the two meals. As in UK it is a chance for crafty staff to inflate the bill.

The restaurants in Fethiye fish market buy their wine for 5 or 6 YTL a bottle and sell it for between 30 and 55 YTL depending on how much they think you can afford.

Re: House wine prices in the Restaurants
I have tried both Cankaya and Kavak and the first two glasses always taste like paint stripper to me.....by the third i can't taste anything. Hic. Which is surprising for me as i'm not a wine snob at all....i'm more than happy with a glass of Hardy's Chardonnay....wish you could get it here!

Re: House wine prices in the Restaurants
I have stopped buying wine from Kavaklidere as their prices were getting ridiculous, even wholesale. I now buy from Sevilen so that I can give my customers a fair price for a bottle of wine. Altintepe is very good and I sell it for 19YTL. Also I have recently discovered a really good red - KaraSalkım 2005 (by Sevilen). Even in the supermarket it,s not cheap but is a great wine. Strongly recommended by my customers :-)
