House wine prices in the Restaurants

Please dont think I am on hear having a moan again.... but is it the same over in Calis ???? some friends of ours have just returned from our apartment in Hisaronu ... the last time they visited was in 1997 ... they had a lovely time and enjoyed it equally this time , which was nice to hear, but were amazed and a little disappointed with the wine prices in most restaurants. We tend to agree with them... we always ask for `house` wine and the cheapest we experienced out there this season was £7 per bottle ... in fact one bottle of house wine we ordered in the Festival Restaurant they wanted £9.50 on their wine list !! when I said to the waiter, I am not paying that, just bring us two small beers, and " why £9.50 ? when round the corner it was £7 ? " he went back stage, came back out and said " I have spoken to the manager, this is Turkey.... you can have it for £7 " so we did..... It just goes to show.... make your protests sensibly and you can get satisfaction.
Restaurants have to make a profit... yes... of course.... they are running a business... but charging extortionate prices for house wine that you can get at a Migro`s for less than £3 a bottle .... no !!!

Also I wish the waiters wouldnt constantly after a few sips keep `topping up your glass` we know that old trick too well... its just to get you to order another bottle quickly. They do it in England just the same.

But heres the good news we discovered a red and a white wine at one of the supermarkets in Hisaronu ... turkish wine... excellent value and not `plonk` the bottle was equivilant to two and a half ordinary bottles for an amazing 8 Lira a bottle !!!!!!
Which was great for keeping, and drinking in our apartment !!!! Anyone else discover this wine ?? and the bottles are of a super shape, ideal for all sorts of things... our in house caretaker has all the empties and takes them back to his village.... as you know the turks throw nothing away

The cheapest is available from the corner shops/mini markets and is around 5ytl for 2 ltrs. It is as good as many wines twice the price. It is not sold in the big supermarkets. White and red - stick them in the fridge and they are fine.

Yeah they sell the big 2.5 litre bottles here is Kus, only ever seen red though not white. If someone knows any different tell me. But I agree, wine is very expensive in the restaurants, I wouldn't care if it was half decent, but it's not.

I drink several wines and one of my favourite wines at the moment is EVIN and a 2.5 lira a bottle its brilliant I do find the red nicer when its chilled a bit. The wine comes in red, white and rose and recomend everyone to try it!

There are a few brands, all pretty much the same. When you go into the markets (small shops) look for the large bottles - these again come in different shapes but are 2 or 2.5 ltrs. In my markets they range between 5 and 7 ytl.
Another alternative is to go up to the Wine Houses in Uzumlu where they sell rough wine in old Cola bottles for about the same price. That is interesting to do but the wine in the markets is more reliable and you can't pop up to Uzumlu every time you want a bottle.

Re: House wine prices in the Restaurants

Evim is ok but I prefer Sirince which is 2-3 lira a bottle in Marmaris. I had a conversation with my new bakkal a while ago who was shocked I knew so much about the cheap Turkish wines! mind you he said dont drink too much Evim as its a bit tarty and not good for the stomach!
I used to drink those litre boxes of wine when I was in Spain and they were great - about 50p a box back then. My theory is if they dont taste too good either add Sprite or tonic or use for cooking!
