Angry Re: Manchester to Dalaman 2 1/2 days drive !!

Hmph not happy with Norwich Union!
Called them to request a green card (just in case), and they asked me where I was travelling in Europe and for what purpose.
Went through all the drive-through countries with them explaining most of the time would be in Turkey. Bearing in mind it will be maximum 8 weeks they wanted another 160 on my fully comp insurance to cover me and 26 for something else. Whats the point in fully comp if you have to pay a third again for just 2 months?
Then discovered my breakdown cover isnt valid in Turkey, looked at RAC and thats another 135.
So theres another neary 300 on top.
If anyones done this have their insurance company charged them extra on top?

Re: Manchester to Dalaman 2 1/2 days drive !!

Most UK insurance companies won't insure you past Istanbul unless you pay a huge extra premium. They seem to think that Anatolian Turkey is "Bandit Country".

You're far better off buying extra insurance at the border.

Re: Manchester to Dalaman 2 1/2 days drive !!

Thanks for that!

So roughly how much would this extra insurance cost and would it work alongside my own fully comp insurance or is it a stand-alone just for Turkey?

Also, the member that did the run from Manchester to Dalaman mentioned breakdown cover charges of 42 roughly, can I ask which company this is from please.

And are there any other 'hidden' costs, I assume I would need the euro pack of triangle, headlights etc etc anyway.

Re: Manchester to Dalaman 2 1/2 days drive !!

Even more confused now haha.
Checked via michelin and the rac route planner which are both different.
Theres nearly 500km less on the RAC one.
The via michelin route takes you round the Sea of Marmara past Istanbul, whereas the RAC one goes down through Kadikoy and Canakkale, avoiding Istanbul (which sounds preferable and quicker)
Also did the via michelin route with my own car details and fuel consumption and the cost is now less than 250 including tolls so things may be looking up if I can sort out green cards, insurances at borders etc.
Thanks for your help so far folk

Hi Paul. Just driven to Turkey - how in the blazes did you manage it in two and a half days? I couldn't get insurance for Serbia so had to travel via Rumania and Bulgaria. My experience of these 2 countries were pretty grim -especially Rumania . The roads were shocking and the police very keen to trap British drivers for supposed speeding. Wouldn't do it again !

Hi. Don't know what age you are but I would advise anybody 50+ to consider Saga Insurance. Very competitive pricing and they will provide you with a free Green Card for Turkey. Also -their breakdown cover included Turkey.

Re: Manchester to Dalaman 2 1/2 days drive !!

Hi Davlins, sorry been in the uk working for xmas and was having problems with my dogle internet !,glad you made it ok,i did the serbia route as in my thread, that was were they charged me 100 euros to pass through but the roads were good and the route is 300 miles shorter so probably worth paying, the 2 1/2 days was a big push but i did use to do truck driving in the uk and was more used to driving long hours and we were motoring !!

When Looroll asked about the breakdown cover i used RAC and made a point of starting it the day afetr i left and only did 3 days to get me into turkey, every journey is a risk car wise but if you have had it checked out properly and its a reasonably late model then it should be ok,it was mainly the eastern european countries i was bothered about breaking down in,i knew that once i hit turkey i could manage to speak as much as i could and could call on a friend on the phone if i needed it.

Paul

Back in Dalaman now if anyone needs anymore advice

Re: Manchester to Dalaman 2 1/2 days drive !!

Hi Jecuk,at the border the customs seemed to be more interested in cars from Bulgaria than ours, thing is be sensible with what you bring and pack the car tight and put the things at risk at the bottom, its very unlikely that they would ask you to empty the whole car as there is a queue of cars coming in behind you, we were sh***ing ourselves when we saw them looking in cars but as i put in the post they just waved us through.

Also if anyone drives over after april and comes the ferry way from itlay i know a few people who have done this and the customs are not as nosey so i beleive.

I am possibly doing the trip again maybe march time so will keep people informed.

Paul
