Hmph not happy with Norwich Union!
Called them to request a green card (just in case), and they asked me where I was travelling in Europe and for what purpose.
Went through all the drive-through countries with them explaining most of the time would be in Turkey. Bearing in mind it will be maximum 8 weeks they wanted another £160 on my fully comp insurance to cover me and £26 for something else. Whats the point in fully comp if you have to pay a third again for just 2 months?
Then discovered my breakdown cover isnt valid in Turkey, looked at RAC and thats another £135.
So theres another neary £300 on top.
If anyones done this have their insurance company charged them extra on top?

Most UK insurance companies won't insure you past Istanbul unless you pay a huge extra premium. They seem to think that Anatolian Turkey is "Bandit Country".

You're far better off buying extra insurance at the border.

So roughly how much would this extra insurance cost and would it work alongside my own fully comp insurance or is it a stand-alone just for Turkey?

Also, the member that did the run from Manchester to Dalaman mentioned breakdown cover charges of £42 roughly, can I ask which company this is from please.

And are there any other 'hidden' costs, I assume I would need the euro pack of triangle, headlights etc etc anyway.

Even more confused now haha.
Checked via michelin and the rac route planner which are both different.
Theres nearly 500km less on the RAC one.
The via michelin route takes you round the Sea of Marmara past Istanbul, whereas the RAC one goes down through Kadikoy and Canakkale, avoiding Istanbul (which sounds preferable and quicker)
Also did the via michelin route with my own car details and fuel consumption and the cost is now less than £250 including tolls so things may be looking up if I can sort out green cards, insurances at borders etc.

going by the rest of the questions that have been asked and still waiting for the replies i was thinking of doing the trip early next year but would like to know how the customsat the border were regarding searching the car for goods as i was thinking of taking out a flat packed kitchen , electical goods etc did you have any problems in that area..
