Re: is getting a turkish license essential?

Taken from the FCO website:
If you wish to drive in Turkey, you are required to carry either an International Driving Permit issued in the UK or a notarised copy, in Turkish, of your Driving Licence. Please note provisional driving licences are not recognised. An 'A' category standard motorcycle licence is required to hire motorcycles over 50cc in Turkey. An 'A1' category 'light motorcycle' driving licence is only suitable for motorcycles below 50cc. It is against the law not to wear a helmet.

Taken from the AA website:
I – UK driving licences valid for 90 days.
J – IDP recommended as, in the event of an accident, some insurance companies will insist on seeing one. Additionally those licences which do not incorporate a photograph need to be accompanied by photographic proof of identity.

Taken from the Turkish Embassy website:
In addition, you are also supposed to hold an appropriate driving license. You can gather a driving license that will allow you to drive in Turkey if you register to an authorised Driving Course and pass all examinations. In order to replace your UK driving licence with Turkish driving licence, you first need
-to have your UK driving licence translated into Turkish,
-to have the translated document notarised in Turkey or have it legalised at
the Consulate General in London (Please refer to Section 2.5.10),
-to gather an application form/file from the local Association of Drivers ("Soforler Odasi" in Turkish) and fill in it.
-to have resident permit,
-blood type certificate,
-3 passport size photo,
-to have a full medical examination report from a state or private hospital,
Next, you are required to present the relevant documents to officers at the local
Transport Registrar (Trafik Tescil Mudurlugu) which is at local police headquarters.
For the full list of required documents for driving licence and vehicle registration
please visit the Traffic Department's website at ::.. TRAFİK HİZMETLERİ BAŞKANLIĞI ..::

To sum up:
Tourists, up to 90 days on a UK licence with an IDP, Residents need a Turkish licence additionally if you are no longer resident in the UK you may not have a UK licence.

Alternatively you may of course use Joe 90's ID and argue the toss when push comes to shove.

Re: is getting a turkish license essential?

Once you reach 70 in the UK you have to re-apply for a license which will then last for 3yrs, but of course you have to have a PERMANENT UK address.
You can always use a relatives address (with permission) but not permanently living there and getting caught out could land you with up to a £1000 fine.

So if living permanently in Turkey with a Res.P and just an English license which only lasts for 1yr, all it needs is a stroppy traffic police oficer and you are in seriuos trouble.

Hijo remarked he thought a law had been passed last year about the license only lasting till you are 70 in Turkey, however I got my Turkish license in April last at age of 72 and told it was for life, but then laws change here all the time!

Re: is getting a turkish license essential?

Hi guys,

I read on a website from a Turkish Car driver school that:

Turks with a foreing driving licence (for exemple Turks that live din the UK of Germany) need to get a Turkish drivers licence after 1 year.

FOREIGNERS after residing longer then 1 year in Turkey need to have a notarised translated copy of their foreign drivers licence togehter with their normal drivers licence.

This is what I found out. If any one has proof of ohter regulations, thank you to let us know.

Enjoy Turkey !
