No residency permit

As the title suggests I dont have a R.P.
I cant seem to get a difinitive answer to a couple of questions.
I own a scooter and now I cant ride it because the law has changed and I dont have a bike licence.
Can I still get it MOTd and pay the tax with no R.P. (I have a tax no)
Does the owner get a fine for no MOT even though it is off the road, and if so how much is the fine.
Thank you in anticipation
Danny

Re: No residency permit

You will probably get different answers, depending on the area of Turkey where people live!

Some people have recently said they have been unable to renew bike/car insurance without a RP.
Our English neighbour last week had his scooter MOT'd, and reinsured without a RP or a yabanci kimlik number. His old fashioned tax number was sufficient for both.

Re: No residency permit

There is no such thing as a SORN here, you have to keep any vehicle taxed & insured at all times.

Re: No residency permit

I think that if you own a motorised vehicle here then you have to get an RP.

Now RPs are now much affordable, the price of them should not be an excuse.

Why should you drive illegally over here, regardless of what other people do?

Re: No residency permit

Get of your high horse tommy, nobody is talking about wanting to ride illegaly, Im just asking questions so I am not doing anything illegal !!!.
On another thread on this forum, a member posted, The new law does not effect the owner if the scooter was purchased before the law came into effect (me) he also posted that the Polis confirmed this when he enquired at the Polis station.
I have also been told by an ex pat, that he still rides his 125cc scooter without a full bike licence because he has an I.D.P. (international driving permit) from the post office in the U.K. at the princly sum of 5.50.

If you read my earlier post Tommie this is not the case in our area. As I said, my neighbour MOT'd and reinsured his Honda 250 without a RP or yabanci kimlik number.

What is required is for everyone, including the Government and Polis, to standardise the laws and procedures so that everyone knows what is required of them to be "legal."

It is totally wrong for you to suggest that people are driving "illegally" when the authorities in different regions interpret the rules differently.

My neighbour, for example, is doing nothing illegal. He has gone to his insurance company and the official MOT centre and done everything required of him after being told he does not need an RP to do it.

HOWEVER....there has often been "misunderstandings" about the Turkish law regarding people driving motorcycles over 50cc without a full driving licence. The Turkish Government and the Turkish Law does not recognise UK provisional licences, which normally allow people to rise motorbikes in the UK with L plates etc.

As a result, to be 100% legal you should have a full motorbike licence to ride a motorbike legally in Turkey over 50cc. Various arguments including IDPs, translations of licences etc , have all been put forward, but the real answer is you need a full motorbike licence.
It has to be said however that many people continue to disregard this and get away with it, even when stopped by the police. However that does not make it right and the defence of "other people do it" wouldnt stand up to scrutiny.

The British Embassy website states:

Please note provisional driving licences are not recognised. An 'A' category standard motorcycle licence is required to hire motorcycles over 50cc in Turkey. An 'A1' category 'light motorcycle' driving licence is only suitable for motorcycles below 50cc. It is against the law not to wear a helmet.

Contravention of the above could result in a heavy fine.

This is exactly what I need to know, how do the polis in Didim Aydin interpret the Law ?

Hopefully someone with experience from your area will help, as opposed to hearsay reports. I am sure they will be along to help.
