Very easy to do in UK, all car manufacturers have tax free dealership showrooms and websites ie:-

Where in that link is the reference to car buying?
Deniz actually said, that blue plate, tax free vehicle purchasing has not been available for over 12 months now. All foreigners buying a new or used car/scooter /motorcycle will be recognised by a plaka with 'MA-MZ' in the registration.

Re: Tax free new car - what am I missing?

Thanks all for the input. I now have more information after wading through fact and fiction.

1. You CAN buy a car with no OTV or KDV in Turkey if you meet requirements

2. "Retired" means "old age pension" or "state retired" - I am retired and am receiving a pension but it is a work related one so I believe that rules me out

3. The savings are substantial (OTV is between 34% and 70% of a new car price) but it seems that the paperwork, regulations and forms of proof are onerous but not impossible especially if you are organized and have a Turkish helper

HOWEVER - one ting that I had not thought about and which was pointed out to me was that the resale value will be lower. Consider this: you can save (say) 34% of the new car price but you can only sell to someone in the same position (i.e. someone that can have a tax free car too). the tax free portion can be transferred to the new owner but in that case the new owner is going to want to pay a much lower price especially if he / she has to go through the same rigmarole AND if they can only see onto a retired person themselves. Perhaps that is why you don't hear about it much.

So the way I see it - the savings you make are offset by the complexity and the lower resale value. Unless, of course, you bring the car back to the UK in which case the savings are greater BUT the resale value in the UK is even lower.

'Nuff said. I don't qualify for a tax free car so I'm off to but a new one.

Re: Tax free new car - what am I missing?

hi again .yes you can buy a car but stıll must have M plate..

retired in Turkey hasnt the same connotations as in the uk..if you are in receipt of a pension doesnt matter where from you are retired...people retire here after 20 years service in in some professions
also if you had a tax free car and wanted to sell to a Turk you can but then the plate is changed and the tax must be paid

all foreigners living here and driving their own car must have an M plate

Re: Tax free new car - what am I missing?

Re-activating the thread, I am interested to know whether or not you can pay the tax, change the plates and sell the car on to a local. Has anyone done this or know for certain that it can be done, please? We have a tax-free car but are now finding it hard to satisfy the new resident permit condition requiring us to spend no more than 120 days out of Turkey.

I think it would save many problems, not just for us but for other expats, if car ownership did not require residence.
