Re: Driving licence rule changes

When I changed over to the new credit card UK licence, I kept the paper part of it and would show them that I DID have all the qualifying categories originally , that surely must help if hiring a car , as I imagine any points will be carried over from country to country

Re: Driving licence rule changes

Thanks petere I'm glad you were prepared to stick your neck out first, I always get my head bit off when I do.

My Turkish licence was issued in 2008 and I have used it to hire cars in Italy, England and the USA. I have never been challenged in any of those countries nor have I been penalised for doing so, with insurance or roadside spot checks.

Re: Driving licence rule changes

Have driven in the UK many times with my Turkish licence both with hire cars and being put on the family's insurance for their cars.

As far as Greece is concerned they accept any country's licence which follows the EU type model with photograph, place of issue, date of birth etc.
Infact, the Turkish licence contains more information than the UK one including blood group, parents names, kimlik number etc.

Re: Driving licence rule changes

Thank you.

I was about to change my UK licence for a Turkish one (last week) but we do want to hire a car in Greece for a week or so this spring and I don't want to be 'between licences'. So, unless I can establish that they won't take my UK license till they issue my Turkish one, I think I'll hang on until after that holiday. I will still be well within six months since the start of the new law....

I am kicking myself for being lazy and not having started the process a few months ago (well, I did go and get the forms....)

Re: Driving licence rule changes

When I visited the traffic police in Cesme the other week I forgot to ask what the time period was for swapping my present licence to the new one. As I was passing by their office today my friend and I went into ask. The policewoman said it was five years. We were amazed and said that seemed like a long time frame. She said yes it was but if our current one was old we should change it for a new one soon. My friend said she had had hers since 2009 and was told that was alright and not to worry about it for a while.

So I'm wondering if anyone else has made enquiries and can confirm that we do have 5 years in which to change them over as I was told.

Re: Driving licence rule changes

Well I went to the main police station in Alanya today with new photos. Gave the police man behind the desk who dealt with licenses my Turkish license which I have had now for5-6 years.
I told him that I needed to renew it now for the new license, he looked at it and looked at me laughing and waving it about saying "No,No, year 2020 change it by"
I looked at him and said I thought it had to be renewed now, he just repeated what he had said and gave it me back.

Re: Driving licence rule changes

This is off the UK in Turkey facebook page.

https://www.facebook.com/ukinturkey/...type=3&fref=nf

Consular teams have now made further enquiries with local Turkish Traffic Registration offices as stated in our original post about the changes to Driving Licences with effect from 1 January 2016.

- You should book an appointment with the local Traffic Registry Office you want to visit via SÜRÜCÜ BELGES? RANDEVU link in advance. You can book your appointment online and can review, change and cancel the appointment once you have completed the booking. The online system is only available in Turkish.

- You may need to prove that you have at least completed primary education. However, we are contacting Ministry of Foreign Affairs to clarify this condition as we recognise the difficulty many of you may have in producing educational certificates from the UK. We will discuss with them what the options for British nationals may be.

- The 6 month period (the time limit you can drive with a British licence) starts at from the day you enter Turkey. Again clarification is being sought from the MFA on whether this is a continuous 6 months in Turkey from this date and what affect exiting and re-entering Turkey has on this 6 month period.

- The fine for driving with a foreign driving licence after 6 months is set at 343 TL for 2016

DVLA have informed us that you can contact them to find out when your licence exchange has been completed and check that the DVLA has received your UK licence from the Turkish authorities. DVLA contact details can be found on https://www.gov.uk/government/organi...censing-agency
