Under-age Riders Penalised

You may have wondered if there is ever any consequence for kids riding around on mopeds without licence and under-age.
Yesterday I was told of an accident where the 14 yr old rider was riding his fatherīs moped with his friend on the back. Father had apparently allowed this.

Yesterday, while on public road, he hit the back of a car resulting in boys being taken to hospital for minor injuries (and released).

Police involved then started to levy fines on father and boy. Boy fined 2000TL for carrying a passenger, and 4000TL (not sure how this was calculated) for riding on the road. Father was then fined for allowing his boy to ride his moped. Grand total of 11000TL which is all to be paid by the father as the boy has no income.

Not wealthy family, so unlikely to be able to pay. In this case the fatherīs debt passes to the tax office, and his bank account can be held. It is a life-long debt.

This is on top of any claim the car driver wants to make. He, at least, was insured.

Re: Under-age Riders Penalised

We often see young lads on those electric scooters and sometimes small petrol bikes too. No crash helmets and, bring youngsters they go far too fast. There appears to be no law against it and, in any case, they are great at breaking laws in Turkey lol !

Re: Under-age Riders Penalised

I watched one young lad yesterday as he just about lost it when the car in front braked heavily to allow someone to cross the road. There must be more accountability of these 'powered vehicles'.

Re: Under-age Riders Penalised

On our travels around bodrum this week we have notice a vastly increased number of traffic police and traffic jandarma lots of cars and bikes pulled over but no improvement in driving skills observed.

Re: Under-age Riders Penalised

Our bike being governed down by the narrow rear wheelbase , only does about 15mph (but it seems at least double that when you are on it) and is fast enough for driving around town
I agree with the above comments , the young kids are lethal . We have been waiting at traffic lights on red when one or more weaves past us and goes straight over the lights

I was on a roundabout 2 weeks ago, 10.30pm and the road ahead looked quite a mess. 3 cars in bits that I could make out, A Jandarma chap that knows me well, came up to my car and basically said, "Follow me, you don't want to see that".

So, he brought his Jandarma van the wrong way back across the roundabout, I had to reverse back off the roundabout, get in behind him and followed him down the wrong side of the dual carriageway to the coast road.

He did no more then than get out, stopped the oncoming traffic and waved me out onto the road, leaving me just a few hundred metres to get back home.

Before SLEEPY gets in on this, no money changes hands with these guys but The Jandarma are also welcome in my office for a coffee whilst they wait for their meat from the butcher next door.

Just to finish on a personal note to Angela.
This is Turkey and everything you could ever imagine is possible on these roads. Count yourself lucky that you don't actually drive and only have to look out for us lunatics as you're crossing the road.
