Changing Currency

I went to First Choice today to change sterling to lira. I checked before I left and the rate was around 2.56 lira to the pound.

I was offered 2.29!

I told the young woman I was going to need something nearer today's rate of 2.56, and she advised me: "Ah, but that's the business rate you're quoting".

Once she understood that I was not impressed with her talking hogwash to me, and after a few minutes of bartering, I was eventually offered 2.40 (and First Choice were probably actually losing money by offereing that to me, she said).

What have others been offered while the rates have been around 2.50-ish?

Re: Changing Currency

The Post Office tends to give better rates than travel comapanies. I always either shop around in the UK or change the bulk of my cash in Turkey.

Re: Changing Currency

We never normally change any sterling into lira in the UK but wait until we get to yalikavak but whilst the rate is 243 in M & S we have changed some we are thinking we wont get that rate in turkey in august

Re: Changing Currency

Yes, I've noticed that the shops in Turkey usually advertise the rate at only around 0.5% lower than the published Currency Converter rate. So if I were to change money today in one of those shops, I would get around 2.50 lira to the pound.

Better to change currency in Turkey then - but what will the exchange rate be when the season starts?

Deal or no deal!

Re: Changing Currency

Because we bank there we get the rate on the day, ie if it was 2.56 then thats what we get.

As for being told the higher rate is the business rate, well I think she got it the wrong way around, the lower rate is "their" business rate, thats how they make money.
