Avoid fake goods when shopping on line

One of the problems with Internet shopping is knowing the real from the fake. You may well have seen designer goods on online auction sites at bargain prices, but are they the real deal or cheap rip-offs? Some of the fake things for sale online are almost beyond belief – I reported some time ago on how expensive Cisco networking equipment was being counterfeited and sold from seemingly legitimate sources.

So how, as a consumer, do you spot the real from the fake? Well, the Trading Standards Institute are trying to help by launching a website to help consumers spot fake goods. The Brand-i site lists official retailers for a particular brand, meaning you can check whether a site selling designer goods at tiny prices is in fact an official stockist of that brand. While this is by no means perfect – there are many small retailers that sell genuine goods, but which aren’t officially listed as stockists – it should help you get an idea as to whether a site is carrying real or fake goods.

The site can be accessed at the link below: https://www.brand-i.org/
