Usa shopping

I am sure a lot of people have noticed that the selection and prices of clothes and electrical goods are much better in the US.
Do any of you fine folk know what value of goods can you order/import from the US for delivery in UK /Europe without being liable for import duties or VAT etc.

Re: Usa shopping

Also Royal Mail charges for the cost of collecting the VAT; 8 on the last small parcel. So VAT + collection charge, takes the biscuit.

Re: Usa shopping

If you are to order from a US site then as mentioned above anything over 18 then Vat is due.

If you're going on a shopping trip to US you can bring goods upto value 390 before duty and vat applies, more on the HMRC site:

HM Revenue & Customs: Tax and duty on goods brought to the UK from outside the European Union

so for example you can easily pick up an Ipad2/ ipad3 (March 2012) and no duty would be payable at the airport...go any higher say you wanted a imac ($1199/9.3Kg) then duties would apply..unless of course you started using it or it somehow wasn't seen....Even when Apple had its 1 day sale in the U.K the prices of the products were still far more expensive than US prices (imac is 750 even lower of you get student/educational/company discount!)

With the generous travel allowance (2x 20kg std =40Kg each) to US its always tempting to shop whilst you visit.
