Gardening, I hope this works.

When I go on holiday I have 36 x3 inch pots with seedlings.

I intend to put them on a large tray sitting on several layers of
newspaper, tilt the tray slightly so there is a deep & shallow end.
the pots will be at the shallow end, the idea being that the pots will
soak up water from the wet newspaper.
To keep a supply of water I will fill several 2 litre bottles of water
turned upside down with the neck in the deep end.
The theory being the water will only come out if the level in the tray
drops below the bottle neck and only an amount that will cover the neck
of the bottle.

Tray will be in a shaded place not getting sunlight so less evaporation.

Re: Gardening, I hope this works.

Well kemerkid I hope to do a test run tomorrow, I do have a willing neighbour but last year he looked after them and the plants were drowning (over watered) when I got back so I had to come up with something.
I have a better system in mind but don't have time to get the parts and build it before I go on hols.

Re: Gardening, I hope this works.

You can purchase a watering system from www.mr-fothergillsseeds.co.uk
The big drippa watering system £12.95 . It drip feeds water from a reservoir onto your plants.

Re: Gardening, I hope this works.

I have part of a system but need to get a timer thingy, problem is I dont have time to purchase and get it set up before I go on hols. So DIY ing it in the short term.

Hey I am in Scotland it will probably rain for the fortnight anyway. :-)

Re: Gardening, I hope this works.

Another option is to stand the bottle of water next to the pots with something similar to a piece of wool/rope with one end inside the water and the other end buried just below the surface of each plant pot, in theory what should happen is a syphoning action from the water to the pots along the wool rope.

It might work if you put the wick inside a plastic tube – otherwise you’ve an open system and no vacuum ie no syphon.

On the other hand I remember those old Airwick bottles..

But it would be interesting to know what these little sweeties are Juco.

Do you cook with them or smoke them?

Ah so that's what those funny shaped roll-ups were, thought they were a strange shape.

With my previous reply I said 'Syphoning action' what I should have said was 'A Capillary action'
But yes JC, putting the wool/cord inside a plastic tube would help stop evaporation.

Neither (dont do drugs) but if I could get away with it I would sell homegrown stuff on ebay.
Many many years ago I tried to grow tobacco, I didnt produce enough for one cigarette.
